BEF Teacher Grants Awarded at BOE Meeting

The Bloomfield Educational Foundation presented eleven Joseph Kliminski award grants to exemplary educators at a BOE presentation June 19, 2012.

 

Exemplary Bloomfield teachers accepted grant awards at Tuesday night's Board of Education meeting at Bloomfield High School, in honor of Joseph Kliminski of the Bloomfield Educational Foundation.

Presented by BEF Chairwoman Madeline Wollner, the following teachers accepted awards for exemplary service to the Bloomfield School disctrict for the 2012-2013 school year:

  1. Berkeley/Fairview  Teacher: Meagan Kowalczyk (Speech)

Technology in the Classroom  For the purchase of an i-Pad and Speech and Language apps, to aid in student’s speech and language development through use of visual and auditory feedback on the i-Pad.                                                 $650

 2.  Bloomfield High School Teacher: Angela Langan (Library Media Specialist) & Carl Houser Creating READ Posters. To enable the creation of READ posters featuring administrators, faculty and staff to show students that reading is important.  $500                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 3.  Bridges Academy Teachers: Yvonne Ruiz and Krystal Morrone (7-12 Reading, English) HSPA Success to provide an after-school tutoring program to aid students in successfully passing the HSPA                                                              $464

4.  Bridges Academy Teacher: Sandra McClurg (Crisis Counselor 7-12) School Store Start Up. To provide funding to start up a school store at Bridges run by students. $500.

5.  Brookdale School Teacher: Amanda Pico (3rd grade) Writer’s Workshop This program will implement a writer’s workshop in the 3rd grade classroom. $450

6.  *Demarest School Teacher of the Year - Bloomfield: Linda Vecchione  Grant to be determined by teacher for fall term.                                             $500

7.  Bloomfield HS Teacher: Mike Warholak  Hydroponics to gain theoretical, academic and practical knowledge of bioengineering technology.                                $1700

8.  Bridges Academy Teacher: John Geczy (Environmental Science/Science) Hydroponics versus Soil Growing A hands on experience setting up and maintaining a hydroponics lab, to understand the economic and environmental advantages to hydroponic growing compared to traditional soil-growth method.              $500                                                              

9.  Demarest School Teacher Lauren Colon (5th Grade) Demarest Young Explorer/Scientist Club to promote student interest in science, exploration, experimentation, and Careers in Science                                                             $850

10.  Bloomfield HS Teacher: Michael Carter (9-12 History, Special Education, Varsity Football Head Coach) Bloomfield Bengal Football Tutoring Program                                  

Tutoring for freshman football players and identified struggling sophomores, juniors, and seniors for an additional period 4 days a week during the football season.                      $3480                                                                  

11.  Bloomfield HS Staff Member: Chris Jennings (Principal BHS) Opening College Doors Through PSAT’S to provide all 10th grade students an opportunity to take the PSAT exam so they can take the first step in the college application process.       $2500

 

Total Joseph Kliminski Teacher Grants awarded for the fall term of 2012-2013 schoolyear = $12,094

 

About The Bloomfield Educational Foundation (BEF)

 Founded in 1999 by Chairman-Emeritus, Joseph Kliminski and Past Chairman, Robert Fetterly, the BEF is a registered 501-c-3 Foundation, which strives to enhance the educational experience for all Bloomfield Public School children, grades K-12.  This year marks their 12th anniversary and with it, a milestone of giving what totals close to three quarters of a million dollars in college scholarships, teacher classroom grants, and extraordinary grants for larger projects.

  • ongoing funding for the after school athletic and academic program, Soaring to Success in the Middle School; Freshman Football Tutoring/Guidance
  • donations to support equipment for the renovation and updating of the BHS music studio
  • funds to support the BHS annual musical
  • ongoing support for the V.E.S.T. program, which serves special needs students by teaching them vocational and career skills
  • teacher grants for innovative programs, school wide, in reading, forensics, science, art, culinary arts, and speech therapy.
  • technology initiatives in all Bloomfield Public Schools in cooperation with the Home and School Associations.
  • 2 years of funding PSAT program for all 10th grade students at BHS
