EPA honored school for conservation efforts.
Demarest School has taught Bloomfield students math, science and more over the years. But this week the Federal government announced the elementary school is qualified to teach a master class on lowering energy costs. This week, the Environmental Protection Agency announced that Demarest Elementary School won the agency’s Energy Star National Building Competition, “Battle of the Buildings” after reducing its energy use by 52 percent. With the help of alternative energy consultants Synergistic Energy Solutions, School reduced its energy use with simple, inexpensive strategies. “There wasn’t any purchase of any new energy saving equipment, just cultural changes,” Bloomfield Schools Superintendent Jason Bing told Patch. The school identified …

Tim Green, former NFL defensive end for the Atlanta Falcons, spoke to students about writing and professional sports on a school tour for "Unstoppable," his latest book.
"Unstoppable" describes Tim Green, former NFL defensive end for the Atlanta Falcons and NFL analyst for FOX Sports. It is also the title of his latest book, which debuted September 19, the day he visited Demarest School. Green spoke to fourth, fifth and sixth graders about his journey from professional athlete to FOX Sports analyst to author. Hard work, perserverance and a lot of luck are the keys to success, he said, and everyone can experience success if they try. "He stressed the importance of a good education and how reading has driven his life," commented Demarest Media Specialist, Rosemary Vetrano. "He was extremely inspirational and our school will not soon forget their visit from this honest and warm person." Sponsored by …

As part of Read Across America Week, Bloomfield schoolchildren celebrated the whimsical author's birthday with imaginative projects
Bloomfield Schools celebrated Read Across America Week by honoring a special birthday guest: Dr. Seuss! Elementary school children were treated to a week's worth of Dr. Seuss style imagination, wonder and fun, with special guest readers, Funny Hat and Hair Days, pajama day, Tongue Twister Tuesday, Wacky Wednesday and more. At Berkeley school, the beloved author who opened the door to reading for so many children was honored with a Dr. Seuss Door Decorating Contest. "Some of the doors that the students and teachers have put together are absolutely fabulous," raved Berkeley School Librarian Tabitha Rice. Hard work, strength of character and beauty is a winning combination, says 20-year-old Michelle Leonardo
Thursday was a very special day at Demarest Elementary School in Bloomfield, when Miss New Jersey USA herself, Michelle Leonardo, came to visit. To the delight of the kindergarten to fourth-grade students, Leonardo read stories out loud, chatted amiably, and gave each of them a souvenir photo to take home. Best of all, she wore a white satin sash bearing the words, “Miss New Jersey USA” in silver lettering and the sparkling tiara she had been crowned in when she won her title last October. Throughout the day, Leonardo spoke to class after class about real-life issues like bullying, perseverance and loyalty. Responding to some students’ obvious shyness, she tried to put them at ease with meaningful discussion. “I didn’t always win,” …

Bloomfield elementary schools Berkeley and Demarest recently participated in the “Season of Service” initiative endorsed by the Christie Administration. More than 125,000 student letters were collected at area schools last Friday. In her weekly message to the Superintendent about school news, Berkeley Elementary School Principal Heather Carr wrote, "In response to the Christie Administration’s Season of Service project, students wrote letters and made holiday cards for our US service members in appreciation for their service to our country. "There were …

Demarest School students author their own books on the ABCs of Bloomfield history.
Who knew that sphere in front of the library was called the Armillary, and that it’s supported by six turtles on top of a two-tiered circular base? Many do not, including Mayor Ray McCarthy, who even said so at a recent function. But the third grade students of Demarest School know thanks to a recent project done through a grant from the Bloomfield Education Foundation. All of the children contributed to The ABC’s of Bloomfield, a Bloomfield history book where one specific historical aspect of the town was highlighted for each letter of the alphabet. Principal Mary Todaro and Head Librarian Rosemary Vetrano, who spearheaded the project, received hardcover versions, while the children received soft cover versions at a special book signing …
