Weather-weary towns in Essex County are going to get walloped again by nor'easter Athena, a winter storm that will bring a slushy, windy mess to our area Wednesday into Thursday. Just one week after Super Storm Sandy swept through the region, leaving behind a mess of days-long power outages and fallen trees, Athena, a much weaker storm, could add insult to injury for many. Occasional wind gusts over 50 mph, as well as some accumulating snow that could mix with rain, are forecasted into Wednesday night, with Athena tapering off Thursday afternoon, according to Weather.com. Trucks armed with salt, plows in case of accumulating snow; 5,700 in Bloomfield still without power
Snow is falling in Bloomfield – and Department of Public Works trucks are ready to get to work, if need be. In anticipation of Winter Storm Athena, the nor'easter that will move through our region Wednesday into Thursday bringing snow, rain and some wind gusts, DPW trucks have been readied with plows and loads of salt, according to Fred Menzel, director of the town's Office of Emergency Management. "We hope this (nor'easter) doesn't amount to much," said Menzel. Snow is forecasted before midnight in Bloomfield, with temperatures in the mid-30s and wind gusts as high as 44 mph, according to the National Weather Service. Athena is at the door. Winter Storm Athena has forced a winter weather advisory for much of North Jersey, with the National Weather Service forecasting snow, sleet and rain for Wednesday and a snowy mix for Thursday. Temperatures are expected to be at or just below freezing Wednesday and in the low 40s on Thursday. The winter weather advisory is in effect until 6 a.m. Thursday, and 60mph wind gusts could blow over much of the area. The Weather Channel is predicting that the “subtle” system will strengthen as it moves up the coast.
