Bloomfield Center Planning, Bike Discussions and Graduations This Week

A look at noteworthy events and news in Bloomfield in the coming week.

At their Tuesday regular meeting, Bloomfield’s Township council will vote on plans for development in Bloomfield center. The agenda includes two discussions on property at the intersection of Bloomfield Ave., Liberty Ave. and Broad Street. Last week, the council approved plan to develop a new apartment and retail complex at Bloomfield Center. Under the terms of the plan, the town will get a new occupant for the vacant Annie Sez space on Broad Street, 140 new apartment residences and 11,000 square feet of new retail space, reported Bloomfield Life. New Firefighters Possible, Input Sought for New Schools Chief This Week

Here's a look at what's ahead in Bloomfield.

At their conference meeting on Monday, the Bloomfield Town Council will discuss hiring firefighters to replace members of the department who have retired. The initial proposal calls for the hiring of four new firefighters. In addition, the council will discuss plans for development in Bloomfield center. The agenda includes two discussions on lot 243, which involves property at the intersection of Bloomfield Ave., Liberty Ave. and Broad Street. Plans for the area have been underway since 2009, when the Planning Board designated it as “an area in need of redevelopment.” Officials will be looking at the financial agreement and redevelopment agreement for the project. Budget Talks and Primary Elections Coming up in Bloomfield

Upcoming noteworthy events and news in town.

Elections and the township budget look to be on deck this week in Bloomfield. The primary election is on Tuesday.  Two Republicans and one Democrat have filed to seek their party's nomination for Mayor along with three Republican candidates for Council and six Democratic candidates. Republicans Russell Mollica and Richard Galioto, Sr. are vying to run as Mayor and their party members Sharon Soon, Carol Humphreys and Robert Goworek are running for council at large seats. Bloomfield Township Councilman-At-Large Michael Venezia is running for Mayor. Joining him on the ticket are Wartyna "Nina" Davis, Joe Lopez and Carlos Pomares. BOE Faces Scrutiny, Commissioners Oppose Gas Pipeline

On Monday’s Bloomfield Township Council meeting, Councilman Nick Joanow is slated to introduce a resolution concerning the Transco Pipeline running through Bloomfield near the Nutley border. The pipeline’s owners want to build new pipe sections, a compressor station and modify existing compressor stations. Residents are concerned about the effects increased pressure on the pipeline. Resident Jane Califf spoke against the pipeline’s expansion at last week’s Township Council Conference meeting, repeating concerns she expressed in an editorial for Bloomfield Life, saying the 50-year-old pipe couldn’t handle the increased capacity and that it could harm residents living nearby. Bloomfield’s Township council holds a conference meeting in room 205 of the Law Enforcement Building on Monday night at 7. The agenda includes an update on the municipal budget from Township Administrator Ted Ehrenberg. Ehrenberg will also discuss plans for purchasing six police vehicles. Councilman Nick Joanow is slated to introduce a resolution rejecting an expansion of the Transco Pipeline run through Through Bloomfield. Councilman Michael Venezia will discuss the Creation of Host Committee for Super Bowl Week. During closed session, the council will discuss Animal Control Services for Township of Bloomfield. Week Ahead Bloomfield’s Township Council holds a regular meeting on Monday night at 7 p.m. at Council Chambers at the Municipal building. The agenda, which includes Pulaski Park Basketball Court Renovations and other items, is online here.  The liquor license for former Bloomfield Ave. go-go bar Heartbreakers will be auctioned off at 11 a.m. at the Bloomfield municipal building, per a Bloomfield Life report. Government and School Meetings in the Week Ahead

This coming week in Bloomfield.

Bloomfield’s Township Committee holds a Conference meeting on Monday in Room 205 of the Law Enforcement Building. The agenda includes a discussion by Township Attorney on Animal Shelter Protections. Last week, a Patch reader posted a letter to the editor urging Bloomfield to pass the Companion Animal Protection Act, which would ban euthanasia for healthy animals at township shelters. Bloomfield’s animal shelters have been the focus of considerable attention. In February, Township Administrator Ted Ehrenburg took responsibility for the Animal Shelter from Neighbor to Neighbor Network, a volunteer branch within the Department of Health and Human Services, controlled day-to-day operations at the shelter. Government Meetings and More in the Week Ahead for Bloomfield

A look ahead at noteworthy upcoming stories and events.

At their meeting on Monday night at 7, Council members make their final vote on changing the rules regulating recording of public meetings and municipal offices. According to the new ordinance, Members of the Council and the general public are prohibited from using cellphones or type of voice communication devices during meetings. The rule requires that phones to be placed on vibrate or silent mode during the Meeting. Also, Council members are prohibited from text messaging, emailing or communicating with any one or multiple Council members during any meeting regarding any agenda item or any matter dealing with the Township of Bloomfield. Upcoming events and happenings of note in Bloomfield.

Bloomfield’s Township Committee meets on Monday night at the Law Enforcement Building in Room 205. Three items on the agenda reference the township’s upcoming budget: Township Council Budget Recommendations, a Budget Update and a resolution on the Budget. The Council will also hear a water feasibility study and discuss the status of construction on the State Police barracks. Bloomfield’s Board of Education meets on Tuesday at the School Administration building. The meeting is the first after the resolution of the budget crisis that consumed packed BOE meetings in February and March. Firefighter Heroism and Government Recording Rules in the Week Ahead

Bloomfield’s Township Council meets at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 1 at the Municipal Building. The agenda includes a commendation for a Bloomfield firefighting unit that rescued a woman and her pet trapped on a balcony in a February fire.
