One in five residents said they felt forced out of their homes by the storm.
Superstorm Sandy made an impact on approximately two-thirds of the state, according to results from a Rutgers-Eagleton Poll released Tuesday. An even higher percentage (94 percent) of the 1,228 polled New Jersey residents reported that they lost power at some point during or after the storm. About 65 percent of those polled said they remained without power for at least five days. "Two-thirds of New Jersey residents were affected when Superstorm Sandy wreaked havoc on the Garden State three weeks ago," a press release about the poll said. Approximately one in five residents said they were forced out of their homes by the storm, with about 6 percent of residents telling pollsters they were still not able to permanently return. Politicians said this election season was 'very difficult' because of storm.
After millions of New Jersey residents spent most of last week without power, gas, and even lost their homes, Tuesday’s general election was likely the farthest from their minds. But for politicians who have continued to campaign through the storm, the election has remained a focus. “It’s been a very, very difficult procedure because of the storm,” Essex County Freeholder Vice President Patricia Sebold said. Sebold is the Democratic chairwoman in Livingston and has helped local candidates with their own races. She said her candidates have struggled to reach voters as power outages have stopped their printer, in Irvington, from producing mailers. “I’ve never experienced anything like this ever, in all my years of being involved in politics…

Township will coordinate with schools to reschedule Halloween at later date
"Frankenstorm" has canceled Halloween. Bloomfield's celebration of the ghoulish holiday Wednesday is canceled until further notice, Mayor Raymond McCarthy announced Tuesday. The decision hardly comes as a surprise in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, which wreaked havoc in town and left behind a mess of dangling power lines and dangerous broken tree limbs. "There are just too many trees down, too many broken branches, there are still wires hanging around, you don't know what's hot or what's not hot," said the mayor of canceling the holiday. He said the township will coordinate with schools to postpone Halloween at a later date. Bloomfield schools are closed Wednesday, with seven of 11 with either no power or partial power, McCarthy said. …
Extensive damage could delay service restorations across rail and bus linking NJ, NY and Philadelphia
The nation's largest statewide public transportation system says it faces a massive repair and restoration effort in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. NJTransit, consisting of 12 commuter train lines, 3 light rail lines and 261 bus routes, suffered "unprecedented devastation" from the storm, according to James Simpson, New Jersey's transportation commissioner and chairman of the NJTransit board. The system normally provides 895,000 weekday trips, servicing 164 rail stations, 61 light rail stations and more than 19,000 bus stops. Little of that activity was evident on Tuesday, however. Instead, transit crews had begun an extensive damage review. “With the break of daylight, NJ TRANSIT began to inspect and assess the full extent of the damage," …
Many roads blocked by fallen trees, downed wires as town cleans up after super storm
Cleanup has begun Tuesday in Bloomfield, hours after record-breaking Hurricane Sandy blew through the area, leaving in the aftermath a mess of downed wires and trees. About 40 percent of residents in town are currently without power, with PSE&G crews working around town to restore it, according to Tom Pelaia, deputy coordinator of Bloomfield's Office of Emergency Management. The worst-case scenario, he said, is some may be without power for as much as 10 days. "They're (PSE&G) hoping for the best," Pelaia said Tuesday morning. Many roads in Bloomfield, including Bloomfield Avenue and Broad Street, are blocked by fallen trees and downed wires, he said. He said officials are canvassing the town to assess damage. "Our priority today (Tuesday…

Christie questions Langford's decision to tell residents to stay in direct conflict with Christie's orders.
Gov. Christie hammered Atlantic City Mayor Lorenzo Langford's advice that Atlantic City residents to stay where they were even after Christie emphasized the need to evacuate the city. "Mayor Langford told them to stay at shelters in the city and now they're stuck," Christie said during the a Monday night conference. "Despite my admonition, he gave them comfort to stay." Atlantic City residents who stayed behind were stuck in a shelter as Hurricane Sandy was making landfall Monday night. Earlier in the day, Atlantic County Office of Emergency Management officials called all first responders off the street for safety concerns. He went on to say there were some residents who were angry they were told to evacuate during Hurricane Irene, but …
