The weekly update from Bloomfield High School Sports.
The following update comes courtesy Bloomfield High School Athletics. ----------------------- Golf had a very successful week besting Montclair, Nutley and Belleville. Boys Tennis swept both Orange and Technology. Softball topped West Orange, Montclair and Columbia before being knocked out of the County semis by eventual Champion Livingston. Baseball also registered three wins-defeating Verona, Kearny and Nutley. Mike Carter is two hits from tying the school record. Boys Volleyball avenged an earlier loss by overcoming Belleville and also thumped North Bergen. Alumni News and Notes Temple shortstop Sarah Prezioso was selected to the All-Northeast Region Softball Team.

The following update comes courtesy of Bloomfield High School's Athletic Department. --------------------- Softball advanced to the Essex County Semi-finals with a thrilling 3-2 win over West Essex. Earlier the Girls clinched the Liberty Division of the Super Essex Conference with a win over Millburn. Track and Field had a number of Gold Medal performances at the League Championship Meet. Erin McFarlane was the lone female winner capturing the 100 meter dash in 12.91. On the boys side Michael Pontrelli won the 800 meter in 2.01.99, Andy Afful the high hurdles in 15.93, Jesse Touchstone the pole vault 11’6”, Jeovan Santos the javelin 161’2” (meet record), Serhiy Kralka the shot put 55’5”and discus 159’11”(both meet records). Latest addition to field renovations completed this week.
On Tuesday morning, crews lifted a new press box onto the stands at Bloomfield's Foley Field. The new press box was part of "phase two" of renovations at the field, a series improvements including two tickets booths, a concession stand, bathrooms and a second story addition on the building. The $900,000 worth of construction was funded by Essex County Green Acres Fund as well as money raised through local fundraising. Foley Field, named after notable football coach William Foley, was built in 1934 as a Works Progress Administration project. The athletic field fell into disrepair and underwent two major phase of renovations in recent years. The first phase, completed in September 2011, was funded by a $2.9 million referendum passed by …
BHS grads keep achieving great sports accomplishments after graduation.
The following Alumni News comes courtesy the Bloomfield High School Athletics Department. ------------- Congratulations to Tom Fleming, ’69, on his induction into the National DistanceRunners Hall of Fame. The ceremony took place on May 4 in Albuquerque, NM. Sarah Prezioso, ’10, now at Temple, was recently named Atlantic-10 SoftballPlayer of the Week. Only a junior, Sarah is the Owls career leader in Home Runs,Triples, Total bases, Stolen Bases and Assists (she is a shortstop). Melany Zeller, ’11, lashed two hits as Montclair State Softball captured the NJACChampionship and clinched a berth in the NCAA Tourney. The Red Hawks are41-3 on the season.

Bengals athletics rack up wins.
The following update comes via Bloomfield High School Athletics. -------------------- Boys Tennis continued their late season surge with a 3 win week. The Bengals defeated Caldwell, East Side and Technology High Schools. Softball advanced to the Essex County Quarter Finals with a 15-0 shellacking of Columbia. The Girls also walloped Glen Ridge earlier in the week. Baseball advanced to the County Quarters with a 5-0 win over Cedar Grove. The Boys also bested #5 State ranked Seton Hall Prep and Livingston. The Golf Team topped West Orange. Boys Volleyball Defeated East Orange and Barringer prior to succumbing to Belleville in the County Semi-Finals.

Our Boys team finished in tenth place. Baseball surged to the .500 mark with three wins. League victories over Columbia and West Orange plus a 3-0 whitewash of Wayne Valley. Volleyball topped North 13th St. Tech. They face Barringer in Essex County Tournament play this week. Softball lost tough games to Essex County heavyweights Livingston and Nutley but showed they can mix it up with the best teams in the area. They defeated Verona under the lights. BHS sports update reflects victories and improved play.
The Following information comes courtesy the Bloomfield High School Athletic Department. ------------- Softball went 5-0 for the week outscoring their opponents 55-1 in the process. Steph Mancuso blasted two Home Runs in the win over MKA. Debbie Mazzeo now has six shutouts on the season. The Track team bested East Orange and Nutley in league competition. At the Morris Hills Relays both the Boys Shot Put (Serhiy Kralka, Assad Younas, Adam Wooten) and Boys Javelin (Jeovan Santos, Mike Galli, Vic Olapinsin) continued undefeated on the season. The following update comes courtesy the Bloomfield High School Athletic Department. --- Winter sports accolades continue to be released- Softball opened the season with back to back shut out wins. Debbie Mazzeo was masterful on the mound tossing a one hitter vs Belleville and a No-Hitter against Verona. Boys Volleyball had a busy week with a 4-1 record and a Victory in the Silver Bracket of the Bengal Invitational Tournament. Their exploits have not gone unnoticed as the Star-Ledger has the squad ranked #16 in the State top twenty. Baseball stands at 2-2 with wins over Montclair and Morris Knolls. James Caldwell High School freshman Dean Caravela surpasses father's record set in 1986, as well as 2004 school record.
Breaking a school record is one way to make your parents proud. But what happens when that record was formerly held by your dad? James Caldwell High School wrestler Dean Caravela achieved 35 wins his freshman year, the most in a single season in the program’s history. It’s a record his father Tom Caravela set in 1986, when he went 29-3 as a senior grappler with the Chiefs. The record was challenged by Blake Maffei, Mike Kwapniewski and Steve Martell, the latter who went 33-0 in his 2004 state championship season.
