New Jersey 9/11 Memorial to be Dedicated Saturday

Rick Cahill of West Caldwell to address New Jerseyans who, like him, lost a family member on Sept. 11, 2001.

In view of the New York City skyline, two 208-foot long walls designed to resemble the Twin Towers lying on their sides create a space for reflection at Empty Sky, New Jersey's monument to those lost in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.  On Saturday, families will gather to dedicate the New Jersey 9/11 Memorial in Jersey City’s Liberty State Park. After the 11 a.m. ceremony, which will be open strictly to family members of victims, the memorial will officially open to the public. James “Rick” Cahill, of West Caldwell, Chairman of the New Jersey 9/11 Memorial Commission, who lost his son, Scott, will address those gathered at Empty Sky. “I am going to ask people for this day, for this Saturday, to remember their loved ones as they …

The Changing Face of Rail, Bus Security

NJ Transit has had to take a new to approach to commuter safety since 9/11.

It was time for a change. After terrorists hijacked four passenger planes and slammed two into the World Trade Center buildings, one into the Pentagon, and another into a field in Pennsylvania, the way professionals approach security for mass transportation needed an overhaul. For NJ Transit, which operates 2,027 buses, 771 trains and 45 light rail vehicles over a service area of 5,325 square miles that meant a change in mindset. “In the past we only focused on crime and great service to customers, but now, here at NJ Transit, what we try to drive home to all our officers is that their main response is counterterrorism,” said Christopher Trucillo, chief of the NJ Transit Police Department.  “I think the dynamic now is that pre-9/11, if an …

Bloomfield Officials Honor World Trade Center Steel

Bloomfield officials will use the 12-foot steel bar for a new Sept. 11 memorial at Foley Field

The voyage to and from John F. Kennedy Airport in Queens, New York, took nearly five hours, but this was no ordinary trip. Two Bloomfield businessmen and two township police officers traveled through the rain and traffic-clogged highways Wednesday morning to pick up a significant piece of cargo: steel from the World Trade Center. The Bloomfield school district is creating a memorial for the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks at the newly renovated Foley Field and the beam will be the centerpiece. Landscaping and garden center owner Martin O'Boyle and his son, Marty, drove a truck and a trailer to the airport to retrieve the 12.25 foot-long steel beam. They were escorted by police officers Ben Christiano and John Morano. As a patriotic tribute, the…

Bloomfield Photographer Exhibits 9/11 Photos

Veronica Yankowski, one of many photojournalists who went to the World Trade Center, will have a photo exhibit at the Rutherford Public Library

Bloomfield photojournalist Veronica Yankowski considers the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks the most life-changing assignment of her career. Yankowski, then a staff photographer for Greater Media Newspapers in Freehold, was driving down to New Brunswick that morning to cover a firefighter assignment. She had a radio on and heard frantic phone calls from the World Trade Center. Her first instinct as a journalist was to go to the story and record it. Yankowski said recently she drove through gridlocked highways and roads and ended up in an outdoor commuter parking lot by the Goethals Bridge in Elizabeth. The first tower had already fallen and she took pictures of the smoke and the second tower as it collapsed as well. “What was going through my mind …
