Councilman Venezia: 'I am a Better Public Servant' Because of Lautenberg

Bloomfield official who worked with the Lautenberg praised the late Senator for public service, mentoring.

Speaking the day of Sen. Frank Lautenberg’s death, Michael Venezia described the late senator’s office as sad and subdued. The Bloomfield Councilman has worked for Lautenberg’s Newark office as a project specialist for five years. He said word of the senator’s death came in Monday morning. “We found out about 9:15 this morning," Venezia told Patch. “Everyone is extremely sad and disappointed. We lost our boss and a great friend and a great man.” Lautenberg, the last remaining World War II veteran in the senate, died Monday morning. He was 89.  The five-term senator succumbed to complications from viral pneumonia at 4:02 a.m. at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell, his office said in a statement Monday morning.  Venezia said while …

Booker Mulling Senate Run, Won't Challenge Christie

Speculation about Newark mayor's plans swirled for months

  Newark Mayor Cory Booker ended months of speculation Thursday when he announced that he was considering a run for US Senate. “[ I ] will complete my full second term as mayor. As for my political future, I will explore the possibility of running for The United States Senate in 2014,” Booker  said in a statement released shortly before noon. Political observers in the state and beyond have speculated whether Booker, 43, a Rhodes scholar and Bergen County native, would run for governor against Chris Christie in 2013 or seek the Senate seat now held by Booker’s fellow Democrat Frank Lautenberg.
