Rep. Frelinghuysen visits Bloomfield College

Congressman sat down with students after tour of campus.

After a campus tour and a meeting with Bloomfield College’s administrators, U.S. Representative Rodney Frelinghuysen sat down with some of the students from the Honors program and honor societies. The students shared  information about their backgrounds and studies with the congressman, who in turn his duties and the scope of his congressional district, before taking questions. Questions ranged from political to personal, including how the congressional districts are drawn, his goals for the district and what he wanted to learn about Bloomfield College.

Belleville Bank Robbed, Election, Sandy Top Essex News

Homicide in West Orange, Newark weapon, drug arrest, Belleville church steeple braced.

Authorities are investigating a bank robbery Tuesday at the Valley National Bank on Bloomfield Avenue. Just before 1 p.m. Tuesday, the suspect entered the bank at 22 Bloomfield Ave. and passed a note to the teller reading "Have gun. Give me money," according to Deputy Chief Mark Minichini of the Belleville Police Department. The suspect made off with the contents of the teller's drawer and fled north on foot on Belmont Avenue. Exact proceeds have not been determined, Minichini said. The Essex County Prosecutor's Office is investigating the death of a West Orange woman on Oct. 31. Frelinghuysen Wins 10th Term in Congress

Republican Rodney Frelinghuysen defeated former Roseland mayor, Democrat John Arvanites.

Representative Rodney Frelinghuysen will return to Congress for his 10th term following an Election Day win over Democratic challenger John Arvanites. Frelinghuysen, who represents the 11th Congressional District representing Essex County towns including Nutley, Bloomfield, Montclair, the Caldwells, West Orange and Livingston, beat Arvanites, who is the former mayor of Roseland. Frelinghuysen narrowly lost Essex County, earning 32,699 votes to his opponent's 34,008, or garnering 48 percent of the vote to Arvanites 50 percent of the vote. Incumbent Rodney Frelinghuysen faces off with Democratic challenger John Arvanites at William Paterson University.

Democratic congressional candidate John Arvanites will debate long-time GOP incumbent Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen on Wednesday at William Paterson University at 7 p.m. The debate is open to the public. The two are vying for representation of New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District. Arvanites is a certified public accountant and former mayor of Roseland. Frelinghuysen has served in Congress since being elected in 1995. Richard French, host of RNN’s Richard French Live will moderate the debate.
