Tuesday is Election Day in Bloomfield

Election Day information below

Tuesday is Election Day in Bloomfield. Besides the presidential election, residents will be casting a ballot on Congressional elections for District 10 and 11, United States senator and Essex County sheriff, as well as two state public questions. Regular polling places will be open Tuesday in Bloomfield, after Hurricane Sandy knocked out power to a few schools in town. Power to those schools – Brookdale, Demarest and Bloomfield Middle schools – has since been restored, while Carteret school will be powered by a generator to allow for voting. Last week, Essex County Clerk Chris Durkin assured residents they would be able to vote regardless of power outages left in Hurricane Sandy's wake. Voters can vote early, by mail, and can even go …

For the close race in the states of Ohio and Iowa, New Jersey rockstar, Bruce Springsteen, will take the stage for the Democratic campaign.

Bruce Springsteen will join the campaign trail Thursday for President Obama in Northeast Ohio and Iowa.  The Boss will team up with former President Bill Clinton in Parma, Ohio then head on to Ames, Iowa later on that Thursday for another campaign concert and rally, according to Springsteen's website.  Although, Springsteen previously said he would stay out of the 2012 election, the presidential race in these states is tightening, reported The New York Times.  “His appearance will help with our get-out-the vote effort in these critical swing states, and we are thrilled with his ongoing support,” the Obama-Biden campaign manager, Jim Messina, said in a widely quoted statement. According to a CNN Poll of Polls, Obama only has a 3 percent …

Cory Booker Fires up Crowd at DNC

In short speech, Newark mayor hits on themes of fairness, restoring prosperity.

(Please see our video of an analysis of the speech filmed immediately afterwards.) Newark Mayor Cory Booker gave a brief but rousing speech at the Democratic National Convention Tuesday, touching on topics that included economic inequality, education and breaks for small business. His words brought the audience to its feet.  “This is our American mission. These are the dreams of our fathers and our mothers,” Booker told the crowd gathered in Charlotte, N.C. for day one of the convention. The convention ends Thursday when President Barack Obama formally accepts the nomination.  Booker, the only member of the New Jersey delegation tasked with giving a major speech at the convention, seemed in fine form despite suffering from a “bum ankle” he…

Former Councilman Denies Race Behind Obama Monkey Statue

Don-Ric Self Storage Owner Rick Bond denies racism involved in monkey statue with 'Obama Must Go' T-shirt calling allegations 'ridiculous.'

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — The owner of a local storage business who dressed a monkey statue in an anti-Obama T-shirt said Wednesday the statement was not racially motivated. “It was not meant to be racial," business owner Rick Bond told Patch. Bond, a former councilman and police officer, placed the statue in front of his Cedar Grove business, Don-Ric Self Storage at 405 Little Falls Road but removed it Tuesday afternoon after people started complaining. “I absolutely never thought of it as racial,” Bond said. “It’s ridiculous.” The monkey statue sported a T-shirt saying “OMG Obama Must Go.” The statue was in front of Bond’s business for at least a few days. Bond would not say who dressed the statue, but added it was previously dressed in a Mets …

Obama Endorses Same-Sex Marriage: NJ Advocates Rejoice

President made his historic pronouncement during an interview with ABC News.

President Barack Obama has publically come out in support of same sex marriage, the first time in history that a sitting U.S. president has ever done so.  Obama gave the news to ABC News' Robin Roberts in an interview that will air on ABCs “Good Morning America" on Thursday. "I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together, when I think about those soldiers or airmen or Marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that Don't Ask Don't Tell is gone, because they are not able to …

As Paterson Awaits Obama's Visit, Residents Return Home After Irene

Officials: Hardest-hit area is city's First Ward

PATERSON — Muddied televisions, downed wires and drowned cars are all that remain on the streets of this northern New Jersey city's First Ward neighborhood. The storm that caused mass flooding and wreaked such havoc passed nearly a week ago. But two days before President Barack Obama's visit Sunday to the area, some residents walked into their homes for the first time and stood in disbelief as they wallowed in the devastation. "This all got to be thrown away," said Patricia Horner, 65, as she walked through her waterlogged, two-story home on Watson Street. The carpet squished with every step and gave a faint reminder of Tropical Storm Irene's wrath. "It's a deep shame. I wanna cry." Patricia and her husband, Maurice, 69, live in the area …

Obama to Visit Paterson Devastation Tomorrow

Pascrell: "Obama will . . . witness first hand the devastation caused by Hurricane Irene. We need his leadership as the people of Paterson and New Jersey rebuild and recover from this historic disaster.”

On Sunday, President Barack Obama will visit flood-ravaged Paterson to witness first-hand the damage caused by Hurricane Irene in New Jersey.  Obama’s trip follows Wednesday's visit by Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator Craig Fugate. Napolitano and Fugate toured the state, as well as New York, to survey response and recovery efforts on the ground. Administration officials made similar trips to Connecticut, North Carolina, Vermont, and Virginia.  Representative William Pascrell, Jr., (D-NJ) a Paterson resident and former mayor of the hard-hit city, said the details of Obama's visit are still being arranged.   After hearing about Obama's visit from Napolitano, Pascrell said, “…

Uneasy Feeling in Essex County on Nation’s Debt

Residents Blame President, Congress for Both Debt Ceiling and Financial Crisis.

Carl Hiel of Newark worries about future generations of Americans if the country defaults on loans when the $14.3 trillion debt ceiling is reached sometime early next month. “I know it’s bad because it puts future generations in a big hole, but it’s an ongoing thing,” Hiel said. “I know the president is in a bind,” he added. But Hiel is not alone in his feelings. Sometime next month, according to a posting on the NPR website, the nation’s debt, the amount of money the federal government spends versus the amount it takes in, will reach the debt ceiling of $14.3 trillion. The government is spending much more than it takes in, so the Treasury makes up the difference by borrowing money.
The government either has to raise the debt ceiling or …

Polls can be fickle, but they are usually good at picking up the mood of the nation, and the mood of the nation is pretty surly right now. More economic bad news will not sit well, and the GOPs unwillingness to compromise on this at all will put much of the blame on them if this goes south. And I'm not sure how blowing the debt ceiling and risking the nation's economy and credit rating is the "…   more ›
