Two Bloomfield men to compete in 12-mile obstacle course this weekend
Two Bloomfield diehards will put their physical ability and mental resolve to the ultimate test this weekend at the Tough Mudder, a worldwide athletic competition richly deserving of its name. Anthony Vitella and John Volpe will be among thousands hitting the 12-mile obstacle course in Englishtown, diving under dangling wires to be zapped by 10,000 volts of electricity, scaling greased quarter-pipes and trudging through freezing, muddy waters. "It's Tough Mudder for a reason," said Vitella. "They say it's just mentally challenging more than anything else. Hopefully I get through it in one piece and come out of it with dignity." Some – including Patch editor Lia Eustachewich – participate for the sheer absurdity of it, while others consider…

The policy, which has been in effect for 30 years, will be considered by the NJT Board of Directors at their meeting Monday, Oct. 15. If approved by the board, it will be subject to Gov. Chris Christie's veto period, Snyder said. The change would go into effect on Jan. 1, 2013, resulting in non-union employees and non-union retirees no longer being able to use the transit system free-of-charge for personal purposes, according to a press release from NJT. “Moving forward, NJ Transit must continue to sufficiently consider the interests of our …

Safety initiative comes after death of three teenagers in October
A variety of safety measures will sweep New Jersey Transit lines within the next year or so, transportation officials announced Wednesday, in an effort to reduce the number of accidental train deaths across the state. The safety improvements, which include improved signage, warning systems and educational programs, are the result of a three-month study by the Safety Along Railroads Leadership Oversight Committee, formed in wake of the deaths of three teenagers by New Jersey Transit trains last October. "We are really energized about this with a sense of purpose to move forward from the sorrow and grief of each railroad fatality," said James Simpson, commissioner of New Jersey Department of Transportation, at a press conference Wednesday at…
