Bloomfield Gets New Township Administrator

Mayor, Councilman Joanow vote against hiring of Ted Ehrenburg

The Bloomfield town council voted Monday night to approve hiring of its newest township administrator, Ted Ehrenburg. Ehrenburg, the current borough administrator of Bloomingdale in Passaic County, is coming in at a salary range of $150,000 to $180,000, said Mayor Raymond McCarthy. He is expected to start in about two weeks. The resolution to hire Ehrenburg was approved with a 3-2 vote at Monday night's council meeting. Councilmen Elias Chalet, Carlos Bernard and Michael Venezia voted yes, while the mayor and Councilman Nick Joanow voted against. Councilwoman Peggy O'Boyle Dunigan and Bernard Hamilton were absent. McCarthy claimed Ehrenburg had met with Bloomfield Democratic Party Chairman Pete Strumolo long before interviewing for the …

....."coming in at a salary range of $150,000 to $180,000!!! I think that is disgusting!" Exactly what does a township administrator do? he administers? Like what does the Essex County Supevisor do besides order the killing of deer. they are all corrupt and if they bar my comment - its par for the course in this high taxed town where I pay $14,000 a year in taxes and they messed up my driveway …   more ›

Bloomfield Will Celebrate Halloween Today

Town will partake in trick-or-treating festivities after Hurricane Sandy cancels the real Halloween

Like many other New Jersey towns, Bloomfield will celebrate Halloween today, Monday, after Hurricane Sandy put the kibosh the real Oct. 31 holiday with her super storm strength. Last week, Gov. Chris Christie signed an executive order to postpone Halloween festivities to "minimize additional risks to save lives and the public safety as we begin the process of building and recovering from Hurricane Sandy," he said in a statement. Mayor Raymond McCarthy said he expects parents and costumed children to be out and about around town Monday but issued a stiff warning to trick-or-treaters: Be wary of unsafe conditions, like downed wires and tree limbs. "Be a responsible parent, don't let kids go out by themselves and exercise caution," he said, …

Forget it. When I was a kid, if you couldn't trick and treat on Halloween, that was it. No postponements, just have to see what next year will bring. I'll find a way to ship all this candy to those needy children victims of hurricane Sandy. In fact go stock up at Target with candy for 70% off and ship them down the shore!   more ›

7,400 Still Without Power in Bloomfield

OEM officials give update Saturday on power outages, voting information

Despite 7,400 PSE&G customers in Bloomfield still without power, there's at least some good news in the town's Super Sandy saga, officials said during a meeting Saturday morning. The power company has given the town a dedicated tree truck and line man to start clearing major headaches, including the fallen telephone pole taking out both north lanes of Bloomfield Avenue, near Willard Avenue. "That pole is coming down one way or another," said Office of Emergency Management Director Fred Menzel. Crews are also actively working to restore the Crooks Avenue substation, which powers many of the homes in the Brookdale section of town, Mayor Raymond McCarthy said. The Clifton substation went down just after being restored Friday night. …

FEMA apparently put something on their website saying that the food voucher statement was just a rumor and that they are performing no such service. I just threw about a good $400-$500 worth of food that spoiled during the outage and my tax dollars finance FEMA so I really feel as if I should compensated in some way. Unfortunately, FEMA does not.   more ›

Schools Remain Closed as Bloomfield Battles Power Outages

Trees fallen on 27 Bloomfield homes, with more than 50 reported down around town

Schools in Bloomfield will be closed for the remainder of the week, with 41 percent of town still without electricity in wake of Hurricane Sandy, officials said Wednesday. While power to pockets of town have slowly been restored, efforts have been hindered by coordination between tree-removal services and PSE&G crews, which must give clearance before branches near power lines are tampered with. Restoration of most power could take as many as seven days, officials said. Twenty-seven homes in town have trees on top of them, according to Fred Menzel, coordinator of Bloomfield's Office of Emergency Management. Three of them were deemed uninhabitable following an inspection by the building department. More than 50 trees are reported down around…

Halloween in Bloomfield Canceled, Schools Closed Wednesday

Township will coordinate with schools to reschedule Halloween at later date

"Frankenstorm" has canceled Halloween. Bloomfield's celebration of the ghoulish holiday Wednesday is canceled until further notice, Mayor Raymond McCarthy announced Tuesday. The decision hardly comes as a surprise in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, which wreaked havoc in town and left behind a mess of dangling power lines and dangerous broken tree limbs. "There are just too many trees down, too many broken branches, there are still wires hanging around, you don't know what's hot or what's not hot," said the mayor of canceling the holiday. He said the township will coordinate with schools to postpone Halloween at a later date. Bloomfield schools are closed Wednesday, with seven of 11 with either no power or partial power, McCarthy said. …

Hurricane Sandy: Bloomfield Schools Closed

Important information on what Bloomfield is doing to prepare for Hurricane Sandy

Bloomfield schools are closed Monday and Tuesday in anticipation of Hurricane Sandy, a slow-moving "superstorm" that will wallop New Jersey Monday, bringing heavy rainfall and dangerous winds. Bloomfield College, as well as state and county government offices, are also closed Monday and Tuesday. New Jersey Transit will shut down their rail, bus, light rail and Access Link service at 4 p.m. Sunday and continuing through 2 a.m. Monday. Essex County officials announced Codey Arena in West Orange will be open beginning Sunday night to residents seeking shelter from the storm. With officials warning of widespread power outages that could last days in wake of Sandy, residents scrambled Sunday to make last-minute preparations, cramming grocery …

Bloomfield Breaks Ground on Glenwood Village Parking Garage

Parking deck to be located in Glenwood Village, the heart of Bloomfield's downtown redevelopment project

The long awaited Glenwood Village will soon begin to take shape in Bloomfield, starting with the construction of a 468-spot parking garage for commuters, shoppers and residents. The deck, located across the street from the Bloomfield Avenue train station, is the first phase in the town's downtown redevelopment project. It will be located at the heart of Glenwood Village, a three-acre hub comprised of 50,000 sq. ft. of retail space, 10,000 sq. ft. of restaurant space and 224 apartments. "This is more than just a parking garage. It's more than just residential," said Mayor Raymond McCarthy Monday at a ceremonial groundbreaking. "It is truly the heart and soul of what Bloomfield is about." Glenwood Village was approved by the town's planning …

Franklin School's New Study Park a Community Effort

Reconstructed outside area at Bloomfield School funded entirely by community donations

Students can now get ahead on their reading – or just enjoy the great outdoors – at Franklin Elementary School's new Study Park, which underwent a $32,000 facelift funded entirely by community donations. Unveiled Friday at the Curtis Street school, the fenced-in outdoor area now boasts brick pavers, seasonal mums and bright red and green benches constructed by Bloomfield Home Depot. "When the Study Park is done, I am going to read my favorite book there," read fourth grader Megan Guerra from an essay she wrote. "I am loving the new Study Park and I hope you do, too." Leading the two-month-long fundraiser for the park was Bloomfield Councilman Elias Chalet, whose son, Justin, attended the Curtis Street school. Donations from local …

Bloomfield's Christina Lembo Laid to Rest Friday

Emotional hour-long funeral mass for Bloomfield High School junior killed in Broughton Avenue car crash

The Bloomfield community said its final goodbyes Friday to Christina Lembo, almost one week after the 16-year-old soccer player was killed in a tragic car accident just blocks from her home. Beginning and ending with the trill of a single bagpiper, the hour-long funeral mass was held at the Lembo family's church, St. Thomas the Apostle, packed with at least a thousand mourners. Lembo, a junior at Bloomfield High School who played varsity soccer and on traveling teams, died early Sunday morning after the car she was in the backseat of collided with another on Broughton Avenue shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday. Flanked by sons Anthony Jr. and Joseph, Lembo's mother, Theresa, quietly looked on from the church steps Friday morning as pallbearers …

Bloomfield Charity Gala Raises More Money than Year Before

Second annual fundraiser draws 300 guests to The Manor in West Orange

Donations are still trickling in, but the second annual Bloomfield Charity Gala netted as much as $30,000 in donations Wednesday night. The 300 guests, including host Mayor Raymond McCarthy, Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-11) and State Assemblyman Ralph R. Caputo, chipped in the night's raffle for prizes including dinner to Fascinos in Montclair and The Manor, as well as a New York Jets jersey signed by quarterback Tim Tebow which raised $1,000, the mayor said. "I'm just impressed of people's generosity," McCarthy said Thursday. The fundraiser, held at The Manor in West Orange, collected even more money than last year's $20,000. The money will soon be divided and donated to Bloomfield organizations that benefit residents, like Bloomfield …
