Essex County’s 2013 deer hunt has come to a close, once again removing many of this over-abundant species from our reservations (Hilltop – 61, South Mountain – 43). Contrary to naysayers, deer have not become extinct because of the program, and there are small signs that our nature preserves are beginning to recover from decades of browse damage. Contraceptives are sometimes proposed as an alternative to hunting. However, we need to acknowledge that non-lethal methods to control deer populations would involve significant investment of taxpayer dollars, particularly immuno-contraception (e.g., GonaCon). Each GonaCon inoculation costs more than $1,000 per dose (including locating, immobilizing, inoculating and collaring). In addition, each…

Former Bloomfield BOE member Susan Wolf sees the Board of Ed. leading the district in the wrong direction.
The following letter to the editor was written by Susan Wolf. Board of Education President Mary Shaughnessy wrote a statement last week regarding the states funding of our schools. This statement was made to set the scene for the tax increase that the board will soon vote for. Shaughnessy along with the other members of the board will continue to mislead the Bloomfield residents and blame the state for their incompetence. Back in 2007, Superintendent Frank Digesere along with the board was giving the same sound bites to the public about the state's lack of funding, and how the state owes us money according to its own “funding formula.” It is now 2013 and Bloomfield will never see that “so called” money. It is important to note at that …

Many Bloomfield residents are now aware of T-Mobile and Martin O’Boyle’s proposed plan to erect a one-hundred-and-twenty feet tall cell tower, or monopole, on Brookside Garden Center at the corner of Broad Street and Bay Avenue. T-Mobile’s application calls for many extreme variances. These include (but are not limited to): The Zoning Board regulations exist to protect not only the aesthetic of our township, but also the health and safety of its residents. What residents may not know are some of the following facts presented by T-Mobile’s experts at recent Zoning Board meetings: 1) Preliminary soil analysis by T-Mobile’s site engineers has shown Brookside Garden Center to be a brown dirt site - the chemical analysis is provided in the …

Paul Halligan - After meeting him on the streets of the second ward and intently listening to him at last week’s candidates forum, observing his forthright demeanor and the civility he brought to the process, I am wholeheartedly supporting Paul Halligan in his run for councilman. Admitted to the bar in 1993, Mr. Halligan is an experienced trial attorney known for his preparedness and zeal in advocating for his clients' best interests. He is well-respected by all: Members of the bench and bar, adversary counsel, colleagues at Newark’s Public Defender’s Office, let alone the smallest cogs in the wheel of justice. As Chief Public Defender, he’s shown keen insight and ability to make tough decisions tempered with reasonableness, fair to…
