A Bloomfield resident was awarded a scholarship to attend the nation’s leading conference on diversity issues in higher education. Sherlene Ayala, a doctoral student in education at Montclair State University, won a scholarship to the National Conference on Race and Ethnicity based on her commitment to issues of diversity on her campus and overall merit. Firefighters recognized for rescuing woman and her cat in apartment fire
This week, two Bloomfield Firefighters were recognized for their lifesaving efforts during a February fire in Belleville. On the morning of February 22, the Belleville Fire Department requested assistance for a structure fire in an apartment building on 750 Mill Street. Bloomfield Engine 1, staffed by Captain David Duda, Firefighter Jeff DeJessie, and Firefighter Erick Stone was dispatched to assist. Upon their arrival, they helped rescue a woman trapped on a balcony on the floor above the fire. The crew climbed a ladder to the balcony and assisted the woman from the balcony to the ladder and then safely brought both the woman and her pet cat down the ladder to the ground. Championship team honored by officials.
Bloomfield Mayor Raymond J. McCarthy and the Township Council recognized the accomplishments of the township’s 7th Grade Girls Basketball Team. Under the direction of Head Coach Christopher Romano and Assistant Coaches Felix Plata and Jose Abreau, the 7th grade girls basketball team amassed a record of 14-2, losing only in two close decisions to Verona. They made up for earlier losses those losses by winning the Championship game 37-23. In the government’s official proclamation, the township recognized the team for their effort, discipline, dedication, teamwork and sportsmanship. Leaders of football, cross country programs honored.
In recognition of their extraordinary success in 2012, Bloomfield School officials recognized coaches from the district’s football and track and field programs as coaches of the year. Bloomfield head football coach Mike Carter was honored for leading his team to the state championship where the team lost a tough battle against neighboring Montclair. “To be in front of Giants stadium, that was the thrill of a lifetime,” Carter said after the school board presented him with the award. The school board also recognized Leo Inglima and Maureen Moore for leading the boys and girls cross country teams to continued success. University Hospital nurse recalls father’s death in accepting award.
Nurse Clara Memba had an interesting end to an all-night shift at University Hospital on Feb. 4. While the Bloomfield resident expected to end her night with an 8:30 a.m. meeting focusing on patient satisfaction, she was instead presented with the prestigious nursing honor the Daisy Award. Interim hospital President and Chief Executive Officer James R. Gonzalez and Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing OfficerTheresa Rejrat, were waiting with several of Memba’s colleagues at the “meeting” to present her with the award.
