The High school to be honored at 16th Annual National Principals Leadership Institute.
This month, the National Principals Institute named Bloomfield High School a 2013 National School Change Award recipient. The competition measures schools against 16 specific criteria to see how much they have improved, grown and significantly changed. BHS demonstrated academic improvement by meeting all of the state established targets over the last three years. BHS is one of only three schools in the country, and the only high school, to be named a 2013 National School Change Award winner. A team of school leaders will attend the 16th Annual National Principals Leadership Institute July 13-19 in NYC where US Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will honor the finalists and three awardees. The Bengals will face Glen Ridge on Wednesday, Feb. 13, at 7:30 p.m. at the Bloomfield High School main gym. The winner will get into the finals.
With a 60-42 win over Belleville this week in Bloomfield, the Bloomfield 8th- grade girls basketball team closed out its regular season with a 12-2 league record, 16-3 overall, and won the “C” Division of the Essex County Suburban Basketball League. Next week they will be the #2 seed in the playoffs and will face Glen Ridge on Wednesday, Feb. 13, at 7:30 p.m. at the Bloomfield High School main gym. A win for either team will lead to the finals. A pair of road victories last week against Belleville, 62-26, and West Orange, 47-28, coupled with a Tuesday night home win against Montclair, 45-33, enabled the Bengals to claim the #2 seed. The Bloomfield High School athlete of the month is senior basketball player Jameel Patterson. Patterson recently passed the 1,000 point mark for his career. He has led the Bengals to a 12-9 record this year in the American Division of the Super Essex Conference. Patterson has also average 19 points in his last six games. He is currently undecided about his college choice. The athlete of the month award is sponsored by the Brookdale ShopRite, who will make a donation to the Bloomfield United Way in recognition of each month's winner.

A bomb threat referencing Montclair High School and its cross town rival Bloomifeld prompted the evacuation of Montclair students and faculty around 2 p.m. Tuesday, according to a school official. The threat had been issued in a Twitter message that day, and authorities were immediately notified, according to Montclair District Superintendent Penny MacCormack's office. New federal formula used for a second year.
The high school graduation rate in Bloomfield ticked slightly upward last year using the new federally-mandated formula. The Bloomfield High School graduation rate was 89.70 percent in 2012, compared to 89.17 percent in 2011, according to the New Jersey Department of Education. This was the second year the state calculated graduation rates using the updated four-year adjusted cohort system.
