Bloomfield Honors 7th Grade Girls Basketball Team

Championship team honored by officials.

Bloomfield Mayor Raymond J. McCarthy and the Township Council recognized the accomplishments of the township’s 7th Grade Girls Basketball Team. Under the direction of Head Coach Christopher Romano and Assistant Coaches Felix Plata and Jose Abreau, the 7th grade girls basketball team amassed a record of 14-2, losing only in two close decisions to Verona. They made up for earlier losses those losses by winning the Championship game 37-23. In the government’s official proclamation, the township recognized the team for their effort, discipline, dedication, teamwork and sportsmanship. St. Thomas the Apostle School JV Girls Win GIL Championship

Girls cap off 15-1 season with championship victory.

At the end of the playoffs, the St. Thomas the Apostle School JV Girls record for the season was 15 wins and 1 loss. They finished first in the league for the season and seeded #1 in the playoffs. They beat Aquinas 31-11 in the 1st round. St Joe’s 33-19 in the second round. And finally on Sunday, they beat Good Shepard of Nutley 29-14 to win the league championship. Throughout the year, they played a total of 23 games including an exhibition game at the Prudential Center in Newark where they bested St. Phillips. They won the STA Sponsored Annual Christmas Tournament beating St. Catherine’s in the finals 26-24 and followed up that victory with a win in the February Frenzy Tournament at Our Lady of Sorrows in South Orange. Bloomfield 7th Grade Girls Win Suburban Essex Basketball Crown

Team claims crown following victory over previously unbeaten Verona.

The Bloomfield 7th Grade Girls Travel Basketball Team won the Suburban Essex Basketball Championship, defeating previously unbeaten Verona 37-23 on February 26 at the Verona Civic Center. Bloomfield came into the contest down two starters and knowing Verona had handed the Bengals their only losses of the season. Despite this, the Bengals and Head Coach Christopher Romano were confident going into the game, riding a five game winning streak including an impressive play-off victory versus Livingston in the opening round. Buoyed by a large and loud Bloomfield contingent, the Bengals came out strong and showing a lot of energy. Bloomfield Girls Basketball Edge Livingston

Bengals prevail in close game.

After overcoming a 17-22 deficit at the end of the first half, the Bloomfield girls varsity basketball team squeaked ahead of Livingston High School on Monday night to advance in the state tournament.  The game was close throughout the second half, but the Bengals pulled through by keeping the defensive pressure on the Livingston Lancers. They pulled ahead and maintained a three-point margin in the fourth period, finally ending with a 41-39 score after a foul shot brought Livingston within two points.

Bloomfield Eighth Grade Girls Advance in Playoffs

Championship game has moved to Saturday, Feb. 23 at 12 p.m. at Orange High School.

Late in the fourth quarter, with Bloomfield clinging to a precarious 31-26 lead, Anna Perrotta, came off the bench a nailed the shot of the game. At a time when it seemed that Bloomfield couldn’t buy a bucket, Perrotta’s two pointer gave her team give some breathing room and took the steam out of a ferocious Glen Ridge come back. The Bengals went on to win 38-28 and will face Orange on Feb. 23 for the Suburban Essex Basketball League Championship. Nalya Hill finished with 10 points and Alivia Alston had 8 to lead Bloomfield in scoring.
