Report: Politicians Hide Donor Names And It's Legal

New Jersey law allows contributors who donate less than $300 to remain anonymous.

A published report Sunday revealed New Jersey’s current campaign donation system needs to be revised after it was disclosed politicians can receive more money while still keeping the names of their donors secret — as long as the contributions are less than $300. The NJ.com report said most states allow campaigns to keep only those donors who give $100, $50 or less private, but Garden State politicians don’t have to report any information about people who contribute less than $300. The report said because of the state’s secretive laws, candidates were able to hide about $12 million out of the $100 million donated. The state’s rule allowing campaigns to keep these donors anonymous could undergo a re-evaluation after one of the state’s most …

Hey Kramit, there are many of us Bush followers around, and proud of it, we had it better than we do now with O'vomit and we paid $ 1.87 for gas when George left office. The price of gas has doubled under this idiot, and he refuses to do anything about it. If he wanted to do something about the gas prices he could, if he signed the Keystone pipeline bill, between that and the oil coming out of …   more ›

Bloomfield Donates More to Obama in 2012 Election

Residents favored Obama over the Romney more than 5-1 when it came to campaign contributions.

Bloomfield residents overwhelmingly favored President Barack Obama with their wallets in the 2012 election.  Residents contributed $62,304 to Obama’s re-election campaign. This was more than five times what Republican candidate Mitt Romney received -- $12,338.  The average contribution for Obama was about $88, compared to nearly $182 for Romney.    The map, compiled by NJ Spotlight from an analysis of Federal Election Commission data, breaks down the number and amount of contributions by zip code. Each zip code is colored red, Republican, or blue, Democrat, depending on which party received the most in contributions.  Obama led New Jersey by $1.3 million more in donations than received by Romney. Essex County is shown split between …

Judge: City Must Surrender Emails About $100M School Donation

A judge ordered Wednesday for the City of Newark to make public 36 emails about the $100 million donation Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg made in 2010.

An Essex County Superior Court judge has ordered Newark officials to handover emails about the $100 million donation Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg made to the city’s schools in 2010.   The Wednesday ruling said the city must release 36 emails exchanged between Newark Mayor Cory Booker, Superintendent of Schools Cami Anderson and other public officials about the donation.   City officials did not immediately repsond to a request for comment Thursday. The ruling, issued by Judge Rachel Davidson, came after the American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey sued the city in August 2011 calling for more transparency about the $100 million pledge. The ACLU sued the city on behalf the Secondary Parent Council, a group of Newark parents.  The …

Bloomfield Charity Gala Raises More Money than Year Before

Second annual fundraiser draws 300 guests to The Manor in West Orange

Donations are still trickling in, but the second annual Bloomfield Charity Gala netted as much as $30,000 in donations Wednesday night. The 300 guests, including host Mayor Raymond McCarthy, Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-11) and State Assemblyman Ralph R. Caputo, chipped in the night's raffle for prizes including dinner to Fascinos in Montclair and The Manor, as well as a New York Jets jersey signed by quarterback Tim Tebow which raised $1,000, the mayor said. "I'm just impressed of people's generosity," McCarthy said Thursday. The fundraiser, held at The Manor in West Orange, collected even more money than last year's $20,000. The money will soon be divided and donated to Bloomfield organizations that benefit residents, like Bloomfield …
