Police: Shoplifter Stole $800 Worth of Merchandise Before Crashing Car

Police release more details on a car chase that ended with a crash last week.

Police have released more information on last week’s chase of an alleged shoplifter that ended with a car crash on Bloomfield Ave. On Feb. 22, Bloomfield Police Officer Georgio Antinori alerted other officers that he was trying to prevent a man from reportedly fleeing The Home Depot on 60 Orange St. with stolen merchandise valued at over $800, according to a police report released this week. The man, Mickie Montalvo, 42, of Newark, entered a car parked on the lot and sped off, allegedly striking but not injuring Officer Antinori, who was on foot, police said.  Shortly thereafter, police say that Officer Luca Piscitelli spotted Montalvo on a nearby street. Alleged Shoplifter Crashes Car on Bloomfield Ave

Car involved in short police pursuit following a shoplifting attempt.

UPDATED: Bloomfield police closed off the Bloomfield Avenue and Grove Street intersection late Thursday morning after a suspect fled police following being seen attempting to shoplift from Home Depot.   Sgt. Anthony Servedio of the Bloomfield Police Department said an officer working an extra duty job called out a shoplifter leaving the Home Depot. Driving out of the parking lot, the suspect's vehicle struck but did not injure the officer. Servedio said that a few moments later, a patrol officer spotted the vehicle. When the suspect saw the patrol car, he fled and crashed into another vehicle. The suspect and an occupant from the second vehicle involved in the accident were taken to local hospitals for non-life threatening injuries.    …

I forgot to add to the running total of these types of incidents, the two gas stations on Bloomfield ave robbed at gun point in January 2013, so that's four armed robberies within four weeks....my community policing advice is to have a 'neighborhood meeting' with cake and have an 'interaction' and 'exchange of ideas' with the people who robbed these businesses...that will stop it, no doubts.....   more ›

Glen Ridge High Graduate, 22, Dies In Car Crash

Clay Burroughs, an Ave Maria University football player, died Friday.

  A Glen Ridge High School graduate and Ave Maria University football player, just 22 years old, was killed in a car crash in Florida on Friday, according to news reports and university officials. Clay Burroughs died following the accident, which occurred on a road just north of Ave Maria, Fla. He was a rising junior at the university, where he had also been a member of the football team. The Ave Maria Herald reported that Burroughs lost control of his car on a local road just before 6:00 am Friday. The car rolled off the road and hit a group of trees before overturning. The Herald also reported that Burroughs had not been wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, but that there were no apparent contributing factors such as weather …
