Bloomfield Violent Crime and Car Thefts Increase, Report Says

The New Jersey State Police released its Uniform Crime Report last week.

  Violent crime increased in Bloomfield in 2011 compared to 2010 while overall crime remained consistent, according to a recent state report.  There were 1,176 crimes committed in 2011, according to the New Jersey State Police's Uniform Crime Report released last week. While overall crime was slightly up from 1,171 in 2010, the biggest increases were in violent crimes and motor vehicle thefts.  The number of robberies reported in 2011 rose by about 17 percent, jumping from 71 in 2010 to 83 last year. In addition, assaults also rose by roughly the same percentage, going from 35 in 2010 to 41 in 2011. Serial Burglar Suspected in 150 Burglaries Across North Jersey

Man caught on tape burglarizing a West Orange Chinese Restaurant is also wanted in Montclair, Millburn, Verona and Fairfield.

A man suspected in more than 150 commercial burglaries in four New Jersey counties over the last two years has been caught on surveillance tape by the West Orange Police Department. The video of the serial burglar's last known job, on Nov. 18 at 4:30 a.m., at the #1 Chinese Kitchen on Main Street, depicts the man breaking into the restaurant by smashing the lower half of a glass door, crawling through the opening, and rummaging through the cash register. He found the register empty and left 15 minutes later, police said.  Once police captured the man’s appearance on tape, they were able to get his face out across state channels, West Orange Det. Burglary, Aggravated Assault and Weapon Offenses

Three weapon-related offenses were committed this week in Bloomfield, one involving aggravated assault with head/facial injuries, according to a report from Bloomfield Police Department.

  On Tuesday, July 10 on the 100 block of Newark Avenue, a witness said he saw two men with handguns emerge from the back of a private home.  The suspects got into a silver or gray car and fled south on Newark Avenue.  The men were wearing t-shirts pulled up over their faces and dark clothing, according to the witness.  When officers arrived at the scene they found two victims who said they had been forced into a garage by the two men and robbed of their belongings, including $600.00 in cash.  This investigation is ongoing.   Anyone with information should call the Bloomfield Police Department at 973-680-4000.   On Thursday, July 12, around Montgomery and Walnut Street, a man said he was approached by two men, one of whom pointed a black …

Pistol Whipping and Robbery at Broad Street Gas Station

The following information has been provided by the Bloomfield Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

  A gas station worker was robbed at gunpoint and pistol-whipped on Sunday night. The man, an employee of the BP gas station at 560 Broad Street, told Bloomfield Police he was attacked by two men and robbed of approximately $500. The robbery occurred at about 11:30 p.m., according to a police department report.  Two black men wearing blue hoodies reportedly entered the office of the gas station.  One of the men displayed a silver handgun and announced, “This is a hold up.” The man said the suspect struck him numerous times, causing severe damage to his lip while the second suspect took the money.
