One of the Jersey Shore's most iconic figures will be honored annually with "Clarence Clemons Day" each Jan. 11. Gov. Chris Christie signed a resolution declaring the musician's birthday Clarence Clemons Day, according to a report on Philly.com. State Sen. Jennifer Beck (R-11) proposed the resolution, which was passed by the state Senate in December 2012. The resolution memorializes the legendary saxophonist from Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band. Clemons died last year at the age of 69 after suffering a stroke. “The New Jersey Shore would not be the same without the music of Bruce Spingsteen’s E- Street Band,” Beck previously said. Three of Palmyra resident Frank Stefanko's photos of Bruce Springsteen appear in a revealing new biography about the Boss.
Getting at what drives Bruce Springsteen has never been easy. But, a new biography by author Peter Ames Carlin digs as deep into the Boss’ psyche as any previous book has. Bruce, published Oct. 30 by Simon & Schuster, is already on the New York Times bestseller list. The 494-page book, written with Springsteen’s cooperation, has a South Jersey connection. Palmyra resident Frank Stefanko shot three of the photos used in the book. Two of the pictures were shot at the former Shellow’s Luncheonette in East Camden in 1978. One shows Springsteen playing pinball as members of the E Street Band watch. The other is a group shot, with the entire band jammed around a booth. The one-hour telethon will feature superstar celebrities, including Bruce Springsteen and Sting.
Americans are used to watching telethons for desperate and needy people around the globe. On Friday, a one-hour live benefit telethon featuring superstar guests will raise money for an issue close to home: the victims of Superstorm Sandy. Christina Aguilera, Jon Bon Jovi, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen and Sting headline the event. “Hurricane Sandy: Coming Together" airs from 8 to 9 p.m. on NBCUniversal networks. Local Bruce Springsteen fans know that when they attend a show in Asbury Park, no matter who is headlining the event, there's a chance Bruce will pop in for a song. What they probably don't know is that this winter Springsteen and his crew spent their days practicing at the Expo Theater inside Fort Monmouth in a quiet section of Oceanport. Closed as a military installation since September, the place is a bit of a ghost town. A new, hardcover edition of Palmyra resident Frank Stefanko's book "Days of Hopes and Dreams" collects photos he shot of Bruce Springsteen in Haddonfield and beyond from 1978 to 1982.
They were young, hungry and had something to prove. Frank Stefanko and Bruce Springsteen met in the cold winter of 1978 in the unlikeliest of places: a small town in South Jersey. Stefanko was a working man, sweating it out by day in a meat-packing plant in Pennsauken. But, his true passion was photography. Springsteen was a rock star, but one who hadn't released an album in three years, an eternity in rock 'n' roll time. Following the release of Born to Run in 1975, The Boss became mired in litigation with his former manager, which prevented him from recording new material. With the lawsuits finally settled, Springsteen was ready to release the material he'd been writing as the litigation had dragged on. This was a make-or-break album…
