Help Clean up Brookdale Park on Saturday

Volunteers needed for park and river cleanup this weekend.

The Brookdale Park Conservancy is looking for volunteers to aid in a Brookdale Park cleanup at the pond on Saturday, May 18, from 10 a.m. to noon.     Volunteers are needed to help remove invasive weeds and plant a new "Pollinator Garden," with plants and flowers that offering nectar and pollen to attract pollinating insects nearby.    Members of the Conservancy ask that interested volunteers bring rakes, loppers, shovels, weed whackers & leaf blowers. Members of the Brookdale Park Conservancy spent hours with rakes, leaf blowers and other tools.

Volunteers gathered branches and leaves into towering piles on Saturday when they spent the morning clearing out a long neglected section of Brookdale Park.

Help Clean up Brookdale Park on Saturday

Volunteers needed for park and river cleanup this weekend.

Get your hands dirty and one of your parks clean this weekend. The Brookdale Park Conservancy is looking for volunteers to aid in a Brookdale Park cleanup at the pond on Saturday, April 6, from 9 a.m. to noon.   Volunteers are needed to help remove invasive weeds and plant new native bushes and shrubs.   Members of the Conservancy ask that interested volunteers bring rakes,gas-powered weed whackers and leaf blowers and to be prepare to get your boots muddy.

Arc of Essex County Seeks Volunteers for 5K Race

Disability advocacy organization looks for assistance in 15th Annual Building Tomorrows 5K Race/2-Mile Walk in April.

The race isn't going to run itself. The Arc of Essex County is looking for volunteers to assist in putting on its 15th Annual Building Tomorrows 5K Race/2-Mile Walk fundraiser scheduled for April 20 in Brookdale Park. In a press release, Arc said that volunteers are needed to help with various tasks, including checking runners in, operating water stations, directing cars to parking areas and distributing post-race snacks. “This is a great opportunity for a local civic organization, faith-based institution business or company to assemble a team for a day of service in support of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities,” Arc of Essex County Chief Development Officer Cynthia Villarosa said in the press release. Brookdale Park Gets Nearly 140 New Trees

Urban grant allows for planting of trees along Bloomfield side of park

Trees company in Brookdale Park. Workers planted Wednesday 136 young trees throughout the Bloomfield side of the park, which also spans Montclair, thanks to a more than $20,000 urban grant. The trees, which came from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Division of Community Forestry and were secured by Essex County and the New Jersey Tree Foundation, were planted along the roadside to supplement the park's already lush landscape. "Just to think, a few weeks ago we had Hurricane Sandy," said Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo Jr. "We had so many trees down," in other parks, he said, noting that Brookdale Park fared the best out of all county parks. Halloween Parade Showcases Essex County's Dogs

Dog owners came up with creative costumes for Essex County's annual "Strut Your Mutt" Halloween parade and contest.

Who says dogs can't get into the Halloween spirit? This weekend, pet owners showcased their pets and their creativity at two parades sponsored by Essex County. The annual "Strut Your Mutt" Halloween contest took place at Brookdale Park in Montclair/Bloomfield and at the South Mountain Dog Park in South Orange/Maplewood/Millburn. Dog owners got into the spirit of the occasion - there were dogs in plaid, wearing crowns, dressed as appliances and superheroes for the occasion. The weather was bright and sunny as the canines were walked around two of the county's dog parks for the costume judging. Dress Up Your Dog For Halloween

Essex County invites residents to take out their four-legged friends, dressed in Halloween's best, to compete in this year's "Strut Your Mutt" contest.  The county scheduled two parades for this year's Annual Canine Halloween Costume Parade and Contest on Saturday, Oct. 20.  The first is at Brookdale Park in Bloomfield/Montclair with registration at 9:15 a.m. The parade starts at 10 a.m. The second is set for South Mountain Dog Park in Maplewood/Millburn. Brookdale Park 5K a Cause for 'Comfort'

Saturday's Comfort Zone Camp 5K run/walk will raise money for nation's biggest bereavement camp

Hundreds of walkers and runners will get in the zone Saturday to benefit the nation's largest bereavement camp for children. Comfort Zone Camp will host its third annual fundraising 5K walk/run at Brookdale Park this weekend to help support grieving campers from across the nation. The nonprofit organization, which has sites in California, Massachusetts, Virginia and New Jersey, provides free weekend camp for children ages 7-17 who have lost a parent, sibling or caregiver. "We provide grieving children with a voice and a place and community to heal, grow and lead more fulfilling lives," said Brandon English, Comfort Zone Camp program manager.
