Board of Health Meeting Includes Presentation on Animal Shelter

Board to discuss center of recent controversy.

During their first meeting of 2013, Bloomfield's Board of Health is hearing a presentation on one of the most talked about topics of 2012: management of the John A. Bukowski Shelter for Animals. The agenda for the meeting scheduled to be held tonight at the Mayor's Conference room at 6:30 p.m., includes two items concerning the animal shelter. The first is an Animal Shelter update and presentation and the second is listed as Animal Shelter Transfer.  At the Bloomfield Township Council meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 19, responsibility for the Animal Shelter was given to Township Administrator Ted Ehrenburg. Previously the Bloomfield Township Committee had given Neighbor to Neighbor Network, a volunteer branch within the Department of Health and …

$1 Million Memphis the Pit Bull Lawsuit Dismissed

Judge rules Lexus Project, group that filed lawsuit against township, does not have ownership of the dog

A judge threw out Friday a $1 million civil action lawsuit against the township of Bloomfield that would have brought Memphis the pit bull one step closer to being adopted. Judge Walter Koprowski dismissed the suit, filed by the Lexus Project on behalf of dog trainers Jeff and Diana Coltenback, after he ruled the Lexus Project did not have legal ownership of Memphis. The Lexus Project, a non-profit legal defense organization for dogs, had asked in its lawsuit that Memphis be placed in the care of Robin Mittasch, a trustee and co-founder of the project, Bloomfield Life previously reported. The suit also requested an injunction prohibiting the township from euthanizing, selling or transferring the dog. "It seems to me that in order for the …

Attorney: Council 'Overstepped Boundaries' with Memphis Resolution

Bloomfield Board of Health lawyer blasts town council for proposing to draft settlement in Memphis the pit bull predicament

The latest in the Memphis the pit bull saga has the Bloomfield council and Board of Health (BOH) once again pitted against each other. In a letter dated Oct. 1 and addressed to Mayor Raymond McCarthy, BOH attorney Ronald J. Ricci accused the council of "overstepping its boundaries and passing resolutions which support a group who is threatening and defaming public employees and the animal shelter under the control of the Bloomfield Board of Health." The council last week passed a resolution proposing the township's attorney draft some sort of settlement, Bloomfield Life reported, to end a months-long feud between the township, BOH and dog trainers Jeff and Diana Coltenback, who wish to adopt the dog. Memphis, a gold-colored pit bull found …

Derek, I bring plenty to the table as a solution- remove the animal shelter from under the BOH/Health Department . There is no need for it to be run by officials who have their own agendas that are not in the best interests of Bloomfield or the animals. Some of us are starting discussions of a county wide no-kill shelter- doesn't necessarily have to be in Bloomfield. I would like to see a full …   more ›

Family Rallies For Right To Adopt Pit Bull

Bloomfield family to appear before Board of Health tonight at 6:30 p.m. in an effort to adopt beloved pit bull.

Bloomfield residents, Jeff Coltenback and his wife Diana, will appear before the Board of Health tonight at 6:30 p.m. in the Civic Center to convince township officials to allow them to adopt Memphis, a stray pit bull. The couple, who owns the Paradise Pet store and operates the Pitty Rescue animal rescue organization, first learned about the dog in March after it was taken off the streets as a stray and brought to the Bloomfield Animal Shelter. Soon after, Jeff Coltenback, an animal behaviorist, contacted the Board of Health and offered his professional services to train the dog, which was deemed unadoptable by an evaluator at the shelter. In doing so, Coltenback says he personally incurred both the expenses and legal liability associated…

yes really, because he is a living breathing animal with thoughts emotions and feelings and just based on his breed he is being sentenced to death possible, it is a case of racial profiling not someone trying to get spotlight. They want their dog and they want to save his life. For you to write anything negative is very sad. I'll be praying for memphis and the family this breaks my heart.   more ›
