Valley National Bank in Belleville robbed twice in almost two years
Authorities are investigating a bank robbery Tuesday at the Valley National Bank on Bloomfield Avenue. Just before 1 p.m. Tuesday, the suspect entered the bank at 22 Bloomfield Ave. and passed a note to the teller reading "Have gun. Give me money," according to Deputy Chief Mark Minichini of the Belleville Police Department. The suspect made off with the contents of the teller's drawer and fled north on foot on Belmont Avenue. Exact proceeds have not been determined, Minichini said. It is unclear how many people were inside the bank at the time of the robbery, but no one was injured, said Minichini. Stations either out of fuel or quickly running out of it in townships.
At 11:30 a.m., gas stations all along Bloomfield Avenue in Belleville and Nutley were either out of gas already or quickly running out. A Delta station at the corner of Bloomfield Avenue and Grove Street in Bloomfield still had fuel, but the manager said he expects to only have a half-hour supply. The manager also said the distributor does not expect to get gas to the stations for a day or two. In a scene reminiscent of the 1970s oil crisis, people were seen topping off their gas tanks and filling containers for an additional supply of gasoline. Handmade 4 Kids Use Crafts to Aid in Recovery.
In the back of the Bloomfield Children's Library, Ari Kantrow's brainchild continued to help sick children. Three years after starting Handmade 4 Hospitals while a student at Bloomfield High School, Kantrow drew in a handful of adult and child volunteers Thursday afternoon to construct get-well cards and origami cranes, as well as knit crochet and knit friendship bracelets for children at St. Joseph's Children's Hospital in Paterson and the pediatric ward of Belleville's Clara Maass Medical Center. “They make one for themselves and the rest go to the kids,” said Kantrow, a 2010 BHS grad who has started a H4H chapter at Arcadia University, where she is going into her sophomore year.
