PHOTOS: Making Strides Against Breast Cancer in Newark

Annual walk attracts thousands to city for fundraising walk

Military Park in Newark Sunday hosted the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk for the 13th consecutive year. The Brick City walk helped raise more than $180,000 for breast cancer research through the initiative. Last year, the popular walk attracted more than 12,000 people and raised more than $345,000 to fight cancer. Click through the photos above to see more.

Local Businesses Help Support Cancer Research

Bagels, bracelets and purple hair extensions raise money for Bloomfield's "Relay for Life" event September 24

Bagels, bracelets and purple hair extensions are just some of the wares local businesses are using to help to support Bloomfield's "Relay for Life," an event to raise awareness and funds for cancer research.  Leo Chalet, the owner of Bloomfield Bagels at 404 Broad Street, has been selling purple bagels since Monday as a lead up to the Sept. 23 and 24 American Cancer Society event at Bloomfield High School. Chalet said he's made about 36 bagels per day, selling them each for 95 cents. All of the proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society, along with a $400 donation.  Chalet said he's participating in honor of his father, Edward Chalet, who beat non-Hodgkin Lymphoma through chemotherapy and radiation; the elder Chalet has been in …

American Cancer Society's Relay for Life is Bloomfield Bound

The township will host its first Relay for Life next month. Proceeds will go to cancer research, education, patient services and advocacy groups

Cancer is a grueling experience, but you do not have to go through it alone.  Bloomfield will hold its first Relay for Life next month at Foley Field. The event, which will take place Sept. 23 and 24, will feature a cancer survivor ceremony, a remembrance ceremony and a symbolic overnight walk-a-thon on the track.  "The idea is cancer doesn't sleep, and neither do we," said Deirdre McGuinness, senior director of special events for the American Cancer Society's Metro New Jersey Region. A total of 156 people have signed up so far to form 21 walking teams. Proceeds from the relay will go to the American Cancer Society to fund cancer research, education and patient services and advocacy groups, McGuiness said. The next team meeting will take …
