I wish I could be there for Mr. Waldman's final concert. My own son had wanted to attend to see why I loved playing in the orchestra all those years ago. I'm so sorry that I have a commitment and I'll miss the concert. My best wishes always and my eternal gratitude for being such a wonderful teacher and bringing out the musician in me that I never knew existed.   more ›

Green Energy Academy Lauded at Bloomfield Tech

State and school officials recognized the Academy, which trains students for careers in sustainable energy.

They've installed solar panels, erected a wind turbine, and built a geodesic dome greenhouse that is powered with natural energy. In the four years since the Green Energy Academy began at Essex County's Bloomfield Tech high school campus, the students there have participated in hands-on training to prepare them for careers in sustainable energy. On Wednesday, state and county leaders visted the school to see their handiwork and to congratulate the academy's first graduating class. "You see something happening here that in a lot of other places people are just talking about," said Ralph LaRossa, president and chief operating officer of Public Service Electric & Gas, one of the primary funders of the Green Energy program. Arts Education Leads to Higher Test Scores

New Jersey Arts Education Census Project surveys nearly all schools to compare arts education offerings.

A statewide survey of arts education programs in New Jersey, due schools to be released Thursday, finds a correlation between schools with more arts education programs and greater proficiency scores on the language sections of the state's High School Proficiency Assessment.   The report is a follow-up to one conducted in 2007, and is a joint project of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, the state Department of Education, Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, New Jersey Arts Education Partnership, ArtPride New Jersey Foundation, and Quadrant Arts Education Research. According to Robert Morrison, project coordinator of the report and founder of Quadrant Arts Education Research, the report compiled survey responses from about 99 percent of …

SEPAC Parents Protest Esposito's Termination

“It’s a disaster, what you’ve done today.” -- Special Education Parent Advisory Council member Hedi Kovacs, to the BOE

When the school board declined on Wednesday night to renew the contract of Frank Esposito, one question hung in the air: Why? Esposito, the Director of Special Services for the school district, had done an excellent job during his year in his position, according to several parents in the audience at the May 9 BOE meeting.  “Our superintendent, who is in the trenches with Mr. Esposito, and  we parents, who are in the trenches with Mr. Esposito, feel he did a good job, yet the board members – including new board members – who have no inkling what he does, voted against him,” stated one clearly frustrated parent, Hedi Kovacs, facing the board.  “It’s a disaster, what you’ve done today.” Kovacs, a member of the Special Education Parent …

It is difficult enough to be the parent of a special needs student much less to be faced with a school board that knows nothing about the issues. With one fateful vote, a board can ruin what promised to be a brighter future for so many. I cannot imagine any" higher power" approving of such thoughtless disregard for the most vulnerable.   more ›

Who's Your Favorite Teacher?

Help us celebrate National Teacher Appreciation Week on Bloomfield Patch.

“Every day I am asked what the secret is to ensuring every child in New Jersey graduates from high school ready for college and career, and I always have one simple response – outstanding teachers.” Those are the words of NJ Acting Commissioner of Education Christopher Cerf in a video address made available Monday on the state's website. “I began my career as a high school history teacher, and I can honestly say that I never worked harder or felt more rewarded than I did during those four years. We as a state should make sure that we celebrate outstanding educators every day for their work with our children and for developing the next generation of leaders.” In Bloomfield, you can help celebrate local teachers who make a difference in …
