My mother taught me, "Your religion is how you treat people."
I've tried to think of even the tiniest kernel, no matter what it may be, to define my relationship between I and my Mom. I've been thinking and thinking and, even though people are different, have different feelings, reactions, personalities and more, I'm trying to think of just one simple thing that unites ALL children to their Mothers. I don't know about you, but my Mom was always there for me. After two miscarriages, she carried me for eight months and delivered me a month early. She always told me I was the best baby; I played in my crib without a peep. She held me when I was sick with bad cases of yearly bronchitis as a youngster, was in the hospital with me when I had an appendectomy and two hernia operations (one at 16 months, …

Inspired by a child's question, the editor ponders what the world would be like if God was a mother.
When my son Jack was three-years old he asked me if God had feet. Seeing how thrown I was by that question (does God have feet?) he softballed me with this follow-up: how do we know God is a father and not a mother? Instinctively, I answered, “Because no mother would ever create order out of chaos and then go and undo it by creating man." “Also," I continued, "Two days tops to create a universe because no mother has the luxury of seven days to get anything done." His question did force me to think what the world might be like if God was a mother. And so I wrote: If God Was a Mother, her Commandments would read: Do not waste thine time carving what I say onto stone tablets for no one will read them and, undoubtedly, someone will break …

A state legislative committee approved a bill this week that would bar the practice.
Can an employer force you to reveal your Facebook or other social media password as a condition for getting hired or keeping your job? That issue began to get some attention in March after a statistician in New York reported that during an interview with a potential employer, the woman interviewing him had searched for his Facebook and, upon discovering that it was private, asked him for the password. The statistician, Justin Bassett refused and left the interview, according to the Associated Press. But the story brought to light other instances where employers have sought similar access to social media accounts, and have led several states to consider legislation to ban the practice. California's assembly voted Thursday to approve such …

At Monday night's Township Council meeting, Councilman Nicholas Joanow suggested drafting a letter to the New Jersey Environmental Protection Agency regarding the proposed Lion Gate-Scientific Glass project. Below is the letter in its entirety. The project aims to build 104 condominium units on an existing floodplain at 8 Lionsgate Drive. Though already approved by the township's planning board, Joanow implored the council to re-think the idea, saying the structure would be subject to flooding and would bring additional children into an already crowded school system. On Monday night the council voted 4-3 in favor of sending the letter to the New Jersey Environmental Protection Agency for their review. This letter was written by Joanow…

Who's your favorite Marvel Superhero? Tell us in the comments section
The Avengers opened on Friday and is showing at the Bellevue Cinema in Upper Montclair at 1 p.m., 4 p.m., 7 p.m., and 10 p.m. Overall, The Avengers is one film that delivers, blending non-stop action with comedic relief. Expect many of the one-liners to be quoted this summer. This Marvel Film directed by Joss Whedon is great entertainment and not just for comic book fanatics. Take it from someone who easily tires of long action scenes. The superheroes with their unique skills and personalities and the stunning visual effects keep this movie interesting. Seeing all those superheroes in one film, interacting and battling through rivalries is really pretty cool. The superheroes are summoned together by Sgt. Nick Fury of the secret …

Amy Chiarello Barnett writes about one of the top 10 greatest nights of her life
I have always loved the music of “The Boss” although I cannot take credit for being one of “those” fans. The die hards who know every album, can argue song lyrics and set lists and tour dates and such. But I am a born and bred Jersey girl, and when our most famous native plays his premier gig in the largest city in the state, (not to mention in our own Essex County backyard) ... well, attention must be paid. On Wednesday night, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band played for the first time at the Prudential Center in Newark. And I was there. My invitation to last night’s show came via my well-connected friend Kathy. Her late night text message asking “What are you doing tomorrow night?” set into motion one of the Top Ten All Time …

Set up outside a Montclair post office, the so-called LaRouche Political Action Committee was drawing a lot of attention on Wednesday
It rarely gets more controversial than this. Today, outside the U.S. Post Office on Valley Road in Upper Montclair , a table has been set up by members of the LaRouche Political Action Committee asking passers-by to assist them in getting President Obama impeached. Decorating the table is a photo of Obama with a drawn-on Hitler-like mustache. Needless to say, people going in and out of the post office—or the Starbucks next door—were not very happy. "This is outrageous ... and outside the post office?! You're all crazy!" one person shouted. But the two young people manning the table—who said they were from Bergen County—spoke thoughtfully about their review of the last three years of the Obama administration's policies, starting with the…

A rabbit can mean a 10-year commitment, and shouldn't be a hastily-decided Easter gift.
With Easter quickly approaching, many families seek the perfect gift to give their loved ones and children. An appealing option always seems to be a pet rabbit—what better way to celebrate the Easter Bunny than a fluffy friend of your very own? Unfortunately, many times the decision to purchase a rabbit is done in haste and new owners realize quickly these animals (whose lifespan is generally six to ten years) take more care and attention than most new owners are willing to give. It is estimated that the amount of rabbits abandoned at shelters greatly increases following the Easter holiday. This ends up leading to an influx of rabbits being neglected, improperly cared for, left at animal shelters, or, worst of all—let out into the wild, …
An editor's personal journey through autism.
This story is not mine to own. It could belong to you. It could belong to your sister, your friend, your neighbor, the waitress at Jersey Boys, the bank president, the school principal, the police officer directing traffic. In New Jersey, the story belongs to all of us. The findings of a federal study released last week show that one in 49 children, and one in 29 boys, are diagnosed with autism in New Jersey. Nationally, one in 88 children are diagnosed annually. Autism is a disease that gives itself freely and without prejudice. There is no way to protect your child from it; no diet or vaccine that will prevent it. It is, as experts will tell you, pervasive. Autism has been an unwanted guest in my house for 11 years. It has attached …
