Paper or Plastic: Mayor McCarthy Bags Groceries for Local Charity Drive

On Wednesday afternoon, the Brookdale Shoprite got a new bagger.

Bloomfield Mayor Raymond McCarthy spent an hour that afternoon greeting shoppers and sorting purchases. While the Mayor is retiring from political life at the end of the year, this wasn't an audition for a new career; the Mayor was at the checkout line as part of Shoprite's Partners in Caring program.

Each shopper who went through McCarthy's counter donated 10 percent of their purchase to Shoprite's Partners in Caring program, which directs money to local foodbanks and charitable organizations.  Shoppers could also make additional donations through Shoprite's helping hand program.

It was McCarthy's twelfth year acting as a bagger; Patch's video illustrates that he could have a fine career at super market check outs if he wanted it.
