Calling All Spinners: 4th Annual Spin For A Child Event on March 4

Essex County CASA taps into Spinning, Hip Hop and Fun for annual fundraiser

Spin for a Child, an indoor cycling and hip hop cardio fundraiser dedicated to raising funds to support Essex County CASA, will take place at 3Sixty Cycling Studio in Montclair, NJ on Sunday, March 4, 2012.

This annual fundraising event raises funds and awareness for Essex County Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), an independent, court-authorized nonprofit organization that works through specially trained and supervised volunteers to promote the welfare of children in Essex County, who have been removed from their homes because of abuse, neglect or abandonment. CASA serves as a foster child’s "voice in court” working to ensure that needed services and assistance are made available while helping to move the child towards a safe and permanent home.

Spin for a Child brings local residents together for the fourth consecutive year with the support of 3Sixty Cycling Studio in Montclair, a fitness and cycling studio co-owned by Mark Cohen, makeup artist Bobbi Brown and her husband Steven Plofker. Over the past three years, this one-day event raised over $183,000. “We are so proud to have been part of Spin for a Child from the very beginning. This is the real deal. The dollars raised at this event go directly to ensuring that these kids have a CASA, a voice and guiding hand through the system. Imagine for a moment the possibility of changing the life of a child,” said Cohen.

Returning Spin participant, Robin Weiner Renteria, explains why she supports Spin for a Child. “We have been an active foster family since 2007 and have fostered four children during that time, including Adam, whom we adopted in 2010. There are more than 2,300 foster children in Essex County.  Only about a third of them have a CASA.  That means that two thirds of the foster children in Essex County do not have a dedicated voice.  My family and I find this to be unacceptable.  So we participate in Spin for a Child.”

With 35% of the children served by Essex County CASA being teenagers, the 2012 event features a Teens4Teens fundraising level that will allow teens to participate as a spinner or hip hop dancer.

According to Bonnie Carter, Chairman, Essex County CASA Board of Trustees and Co-Chair, Spin for a Child, the upcoming Spin for a Child event has special significance “We celebrated our 25th year anniversary in 2011. For a quarter of a century, Essex CASA has been providing children in foster care in the most dire circumstances a caring and consistent adult presence in their life when they most need one. In this continually challenging economic environment, when funding from all other sources is decreasing substantially, Spin is more crucial to our operations than ever before.  And unlike most event-based fundraisers, 100% of every dime donated goes to serving the kids. All event costs are covered through generous donations and sponsorships.”

Participants are urged to join as an individual spinner or bring together friends, family and co-workers to participate and form a team. Interested volunteers or donors can sign up at www.spinforachild.org or call 973-648-3308.
