Cleveland Cavaliers Pick Kyrie Irving as No. 1 in NBA Draft

Local basketball star is the first selection in this year's NBA Draft, which was held in Newark.

West Orange native, Kyrie Irving, 19, was taken as the Cleveland Cavaliers' number one pick in tonight's NBA Draft, according to ESPN. 

At 6'2 and weighing 180 pounds, Irving, 19, played point guard for Duke University for one year. He grew up in West Orange where his father still resides. 

The National Basketball Association (NBA) Draft took place at the Prudential Center in Newark.

Fun Fact: Prior to this year, the last time the NBA held its annual draft in the Garden State was in 1996 at the Continental Airlines Arena (now known as the IZOD Center). In that year, the New Jersey Nets selected Kerry Kittles with the eighth overall pick.

It seemed like a good move at the time, if only future superstar Kobe Bryant weren't also available. Bryant would later be selected the Charlotte Hornets, who subsequently traded him to the Lakers.
