Bloomfield Soccer Club Makes Plea for Playing Space

Club President Barry Weiner argues that soccer program is vital part of township's community.

The President of the Bloomfield Soccer Club made the case for a dedicated spot for the township's youth soccer league this week at the Bloomfield Township Committee meeting.

Barry Weiner ran through the strength and reach of club, pointing to the coordination necessary presented by the 123 home games played in Bloomfield over the course of the season with an average of 1,800 players and their families driving to Bloomfield to play.

He said that the future of the program looks bright, noting that Bloomfield may enter the top 5 in the 91 club Mid-New Jersey-Youth Soccer Association list of top clubs, the third largest youth soccer organization in the United States. But he also noted that the program faces challenges. Specifically, the need for regularly designated space.

"The most pressing need for the sustainability of the program is a dedicated soccer field," Weiner said. "The realities of the situation is that we can really use something for our 3-5 year old and small sided travel- meaning 8, 9 and 10 year old travel programs. This small field would serve some 300 players in the fall and 400 in the spring and host about 80 or 90 travel games through the course of the year."
