Bangals Basketball: 8th-Grade Girls Look To Playoffs

The Bengals will face Glen Ridge on Wednesday, Feb. 13, at 7:30 p.m. at the Bloomfield High School main gym. The winner will get into the finals.

 

With a 60-42 win over Belleville this week in Bloomfield, the Bloomfield 8th- grade girls basketball team closed out its regular season with a 12-2 league record, 16-3 overall, and won the “C” Division of the Essex County Suburban Basketball League.

Next week they will be the #2 seed in the playoffs and will face Glen Ridge on Wednesday, Feb. 13, at 7:30 p.m. at the Bloomfield High School main gym. A win for either team will lead to the finals.

A pair of road victories last week against Belleville, 62-26, and West Orange, 47-28, coupled with a Tuesday night home win against Montclair, 45-33, enabled the Bengals to claim the #2 seed.

The Bloomfield girls are led by a core of four talented players: Grace Cannon, Jalia Santos, Amanda Ayala and Nayla Hill.

On Tuesday, Cannon, Santos and Ayala led the way against a tough Montclair team.

Leading Bloomfield, Cannon scored a team high 14 points with 2 assists, Santos scored 11 points, and Ayala had 9 points with 4 assists.

Kasey Coury was tough under the boards collecting 8 rebounds and dishing out 4 assists in the Bloomfield victory.

Hill has been the team’s best inside presence this season. Anna Perrotta, Alivia Alston and Genesis Collins, have also been key contributors.

Perrotta and Collins have been defensive forces in the front court and have shown remarkable driving ability. Alston’s specialty is the 3-ball and has hit some big time shots this season.

Uche Okoh, Amanda Vazquez , Natalya Molina and Ashley Montijo round out the roster of student-athletes and have all made significant contributions to the team’s success.

The Bengals are looking forward to the playoffs and where the team expects to make a solid run.
