Special Education Parents Looking to Rally Support at BOE Meeting

Parents are concerned about changes to special education classes in elementary schools.

Parents of children in the Bloomfield School District’s special education programs are sounding the alarm about the future of special education in the district.

At the Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, Bloomfield BOE Director of Special Services, Linda Colucci will discuss changes occurring in special education in Bloomfield schools.

A parent told Patch that the presentation was made to the Bloomfield's Special Education Parent Advisory Council at a reportedly contentious meeting earlier this month.

One parent said that at the previous presentation, the district proposed moving Watsessing and Carteret children that have been identified as ‘behaviorally disabled’ to a consolidated setting in Watsessing.

The parent said they understood that many of the children in question are on the autistic spectrum.

“In short, the district is ripping disabled kids from the settings they know, in order to save a few bucks,” the parent said in an email.

SePac members are urging parents with children in Bloomfield Special Services to attend and be prepared to address the Board.
