Foley Field Complex Named After BHS Alum John A. Gibson

Saturday's ribbon-cutting ceremony paid tribute to the great track and Field athlete

A ribbon-cutting ceremony took place at Foley Field on Saturday when the newly renovated facility was officially named the John A. Gibson Track and Field Complex.

John A. Gibson was one of the most accomplished athletes to ever attend Bloomfield High School.  As a young man he set a 15-year record in the 440-yard hurdles that earned his place on to the 1928 United States Olympic Team.  He went on to attend Fordham University and later became a dedicated Track and Field coach, developing young athletes like double Olympic Gold Medalist Andy Stanfield at Seton Hall University.  He also assisted Bengals athletes in football and track through the years.

The first phase of the Foley field renovation, unviled this year at the start of the 2011 school year, was funded by a $2.9 million referendum.  Phase 2, now under way, will be funded in a large part by a $900,000 Green Acres Grant.  Permanent bleachers, restrooms and a concession stand will be added as part of the Phase 2 renovation.

Saturday’s ribbon-cutting ceremony paid tribute to John Gibson and many others who contributed to the proud history of the Bloomfield Track and Field Program.
