Scripps North Jersey Spelling Bee Competition:
For the second year in a row, Bloomfield Middle School student Riyad Moughawech took second place in the March 22 Essex County finals. Riyad received an iPod courtesy of P.C. Richard & Son and an Amazon gift card.
Mary Campos-Pereira, a Fairview 5th grader, finished fourth in the competition.
New Jersey State Bar Foundation's Law Adventure Competition: Two groups from Bloomfield Middle School placed first and second place in the competition.
John Shanagher's sixth period class won first place in the eighth grade for their case "The Devil Made Her Do It?" Lauren Barton and Jose Sarmiento's Gifted & Talented Enrichment Magnet students won second place in the seventh grade for their case "Symbol of Peace or Symbol of Death." All entries wrote mock trial cases based on the themes of product liability or the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States.
Challenge 24 Essex County Math Competition: Bloomfield Middle School Gifted and Talented students also won 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th place in the Challenge.
Daughters of the American Revolution 2011/12 Essay Contest
The title of this year's essay was “Young America Takes A Stand: The War of 1812”. The students were to pretend they were alive during the War of 1812 and had a friend who has become famous in history because of standing up for America during that exciting but dangerous time. Their essay was to describe the person and how he or she stood up for America. The essay was to explain why it is important to honor such heroes when we celebrate the 200th Anniversary of the War of 1812.
This year there were 264 fifth grade essays submitted; 250 sixth grade essays submitted and two from Bloomfield Middle School. All of these students will receive certificates of participation. In addtion the students listed below will receive special awards. Medals are given to all 1st place essays, plaques will be given to all 1st, 2nd and 3rd place recipients and ribbons will go to Honorable Mentions. The awards will be presented byt the D.A.R. at a ceremony on March 28 at the Bloomfield Civic Center beginning at 7:30 pm. The student, family members, teachers, media specialists, administrators and friends are welcome to attend this happy event.

Hurdler Steve Taste was recognized for reaching "Meet Of Champions."
Girls Bowling team: Jackie Broadfoot, MaryRose Marcaida, Francene Rose Occena and Christina Spithogiannis recognized for winning the League Championship for the third straight year.
Wrestlers Kyle Christiansen and Nate Garcia recognized for winning County and District Championships in their respective weight classes. Seventy percent of Bloomfield High School wrestlers qualified as scholar athletes.
Boys Basketball Coach Patrick Brunner recognized for winning his 200th career game as a Coach.
