Building Collapse Highlights Need for Community Development

The roof of vacant building at the Oakes Pond redevelopment site partially collapsed on Sunday, only a day before two meetings to address future plans for the property were to take place.  No one was injured in the collapse.

The nonpartisan community group, “Save Bloomfield Now” encouraged residents to attend Monday night’s council meeting to discuss both the Oakes Pond project at 225 Belleville Avenue and the Hartz Mountain project at 192 Bloomfield Avenue.

“This may be the final meeting on 225 Belleville Avenue, (Oaks Pond/National Starch,)” said the group in an email to Patch.  “The last time residents can speak.  The Planning Board may vote on Tuesday night!”

Monday’s meeting will take place at 7:00 PM in the Law Enforcement Building, room 205.

The agenda topic will be: "Traffic Expert - Major Traffic problems for Belleville Ave. and surrounding streets as well as concerns over the Emergency Exit onto Spring Street for Fire and Flooding at the site."

Tuesday’s Planning Board meeting will take place at 7:00 PM in the Municipal Building, Council Chambers, 2nd Floor.

Save Bloomfield Now is a grassroots community organization.

"The taxpayers of Bloomfield desperately need a redevelopment solution that will bring in ratables and provide tax relief to all the Taxpayers of Bloomfield," stated the group via email. "We are not against development and want a vibrant and successful Bloomfield. 

"We are a nonpartisan group of Bloomfield residents committed to keeping Bloomfield as a town that is affordable, with a high quality of life and good schools, by fighting over-development and other bad local government policies that sacrifice the long-term best interests of Bloomfield for dubious short-term gain."
