Bloomfield Library Offers Free Summer Activities

Summertime in the Bloomfield Public Library, 90 Broad St., isn't just restricted to books. Board games and movies are just some of the fun, free activities being offered to the public during the vacation season.

One new event is board game night every Wednesday at 6 p.m. People of all ages are welcome to play Scrabble, chess and even Yahtzee in the library, said librarian Lisa Cohn.

"Since budgets have been slashed, and libraries across New Jersey are struggling for money, and I want to put out fun events that don't cost a lot of money," Cohn said. Another new development is a recipe swap, in which visitors can exchange cooking recipes in the upstairs conference room.

The library is showing recent and classic movies on Thursday afternoons with viewings of "True Grit" and "Fargo."

A poetry club meets every second and fourth Tuesday of the month, and free Mandarin language classes are offered at 10 a.m. Tuesdays.

Cohn said the library is also looking for volunteers who are willing to organize programs. "If people have hobbies or skills they'd like to share with the community, get involved."
