Victims Confront Thieves; Store Owner Ignores 3 Alarms

The following information has been provided by the Bloomfield Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

Commercial Burglary

April 12: A Bloomfield Avenue business owner may be regretting not sending police to check on his business when three separate incidents occurred overnight at his check cashing business.

When police arrived, they discovered that not only had the back wall of the building been broken, but thieves had stolen $15,000 in cash and approximately $600 in coins from a floor safe in front of the store.

Bloomfield police say the owner of United Check Cashing at 239 Bloomfield Avenue was notified of three alarm activations from his monitoring company.

Police say when the first alarm, an interior motion alarm, was received at 11:12 p.m., the owner said it was not necessary for police to respond, claiming it was not a perimeter alarm.

When the second alarm, also an interior motion alarm, was received at 12:53 a.m., the owner once again told the alarm company it was not necessary for police to respond.

However, when the third alarm went off at 2:30 a.m., the business owner could not be reached, so the alarm company contacted police.

An investigation is continuing.
