Police: Impaired Driver Fled Accident Scene With Two Flat Tires

Police say a Montclair resident was arrested in Bloomfield following leaving the scene of an accident in Nutley.

Nutley police reported that at 2:41 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 11, police responded to a report of an accident near the intersection of Bloomfield and Kingsland Aves. Police say the vehicle went through the intersection at Kingsland Street and struck the small median in front of the main gate, then struck the control arm at the gate, blowing out the tires on the driver’s side of the vehicle. The vehicle was described as a blue four door, with flat tires and was last seen traveling west on Kingsland St.

Bloomfield police reported stopping a vehicle matching the description of the one involved in the accident. Upon speaking to Bloomfield PD one of the occupants of the vehicle admitted to the damage without being questioned.

While speaking to him, officers reportedly noticed a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on the man’s breath.

Officers conducted two field sobriety tests and arrested him for driving under the influence. The man, Eric Williams, 25, of Montclair, was transported to Headquarters.  He was found a small bag of marijuana in his pocket and a suspended license.

Williams was issued two motor vehicle summonses for D.U.I, careless driving, suspended driver’s license, and leaving the scene of an accident. He was also charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance in motor vehicle, and possession of controlled dangerous substance. He was given copies of his motor vehicle summonses and complaint, advised of his court dates, and released.
