Newark Man Arrested Near Grove Street Light Rail Station

NJ Transit police arrest man for aggravated assault, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

A man was arrested near the Grove Street light rail station last night after he allegedly assaulted another man and fled the scene, a New Jersey Transit spokesperson told Patch today.

NJ Transit police received a call from Bloomfield police about the incident, which occurred late last night, Courtney Carroll of NJ Transit said. Carroll did not know exactly when the incident occurred.

The victim told police he had been assaulted and also that the assailant might have had a gun stuffed into the top of his pants, Carroll said. She had no information on the condition of the victim.

Belleville police assisted in a search of the area, which is not far from the Silver Lake light rail stop in Belleville.

NJ Transit police later found the suspect, 27-year-old Fernando H. Arce of Newark, on Belmont Avenue in Bloomfield. He was charged with aggravated assault, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct, Carroll said. Arce also had two outstanding warrants. No weapon was recovered, Carroll said.

Arce was being held today at the Essex County Jail in Newark.
