Man Fatally Struck by NJ Transit Train at Watsessing Ave. Station

Victim described as adult male

An unidentified person was fatally struck by a westbound New Jersey Transit train at the Watsessing Avenue station in Bloomfield shortly before 4 p.m. Wednesday, officials have confirmed.

Train 1003 was traveling on track 1 when it struck an adult male around 3:50 p.m., according to Penny Bassett Hackett, spokesperson for NJ Transit. It is unknown if the cause of death was a suicide.

"It's much too soon," said Bassett Hackett when asked if the incident was being investigated as a suicide.

Further details of the victim are not yet known.

The Montclair-Boonton line train, originating from Hoboken at 3:32 p.m., had just stopped at the Broad Street station in Newark at 3:48 p.m. and was enroute to the Bloomfield station on Glenwood Avenue in Bloomfield, where it was scheduled to arrive at 3:55 p.m. The train, which was not scheduled to stop at Watsessing Station, was carrying about 60 passengers, who were transferred to Montclair-Boonton line Train 6253. No one on the train was injured.

The Montclair-Boonton line is currently experiencing 15-30 minute delays, according to Bassett Hackett.

Bloomfield police, as well as transit officials, cordoned off the train station at Watsessing Avenue near Molter Place. They deferred all questions to NJ Transit.
