Glen Ridge High Graduate, 22, Dies In Car Crash

Clay Burroughs, an Ave Maria University football player, died Friday.

 

A Glen Ridge High School graduate and Ave Maria University football player, just 22 years old, was killed in a car crash in Florida on Friday, according to news reports and university officials.

Clay Burroughs died following the accident, which occurred on a road just north of Ave Maria, Fla. He was a rising junior at the university, where he had also been a member of the football team.

The Ave Maria Herald reported that Burroughs lost control of his car on a local road just before 6:00 am Friday. The car rolled off the road and hit a group of trees before overturning. The Herald also reported that Burroughs had not been wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, but that there were no apparent contributing factors such as weather or road hazards.

According to Ava Maria University's website, Burroughs passed away early Friday morning, July 13, following an off-campus vehicle accident.

"We're all heartbroken. Clay was a positive force in every person's life that had the pleasure to know him," said Ave Maria Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Kevin Joyce. "We ask for everyone's prayers for his soul and for his family as this long grieving process begins."
