Three Teens Accused of Armed Robbery of Gas Station

Trio nabbed shortly after assaulting attendant and robbing Bloomfield Avenue gas station late Monday night, police said.

Three teens were arrested in connection with a late-night robbery of a Bloomfield gas station, police said.

Nana A Osei-Bonsu, 18, of Bloomfield, Khaalid A Gray, 19, of Newark, and Bashir Sutton, 19, of Orange, were each charged with possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, receiving stolen property, robbery and conspiracy.

Police said Sutton and Gray entered the gas station in the 400 block of Bloomfield Avenue shortly before midnight Monday and confronted an attendant counting money in a back office. Gray pointed a handgun at the attendant, demanding he turn over two envelopes full of money, police said.

Police said the attendant resisted and a struggle ensued. Khaalid allegedly assaulted the attendant as he tried to activate an alarm while Bashir Sutton tried to open the cash register, police said.

Believing the robbers had stolen the envelopes of money, the victim watched the men run from the gas station across Bloomfield Avenue and into
Watsessing Park, police said. Several witnesses called police to report the robbers had run through Watsessing Park and entered a dark-colored vehicle parked in a diner lot on Glenwood Avenue.

Shortly after the description of the men and their vehicle was given out, Sgt. Michael Moleski stopped a black four-door 1998 Nissan fitting the description on Glenwood Avenue at Conger Street. Three men were inside. Police said the gas station attendee identified the two men who assaulted him and robbed the gas station.

The two robbers were arrested along with the driver of the getaway vehicle, Osei-Bonsu, police said. While taking the men from their vehicle, police said they found a black 9mm Smith & Wesson handgun stolen from New York.

Bloomfield police said bail information was not available but that a court date is pending.
