"Fire is" Series to Air on WBMA-TV Beginning Monday Night at 7:30 P.M.

Fire chief Joe McCarthy will host fire safety series over five nights.

Bloomfield Fire Chief Joe McCarthy will host a five-part series on fire prevention and safety named beginning  at 7:30 p.m. on WBMA-TV. 

The half-hour series, airing on the local access cable channel, is called “Fire is Black” and will air on subsequent nights this week at the same time and discuss the importance of fire safety and smoke- and carbon-dioxide detectors. 

The producers say the goal of the video is to show viewers what fire safety is like and why fire safety is so important.

Bloomfield residents may visit njfiresafety.com website to watch the complete “Fire Is…” video series online, take The “Fire Is…” Pre-Test to test your fire safety knowledge before watching the videos and then complete the online quiz after watching the “Fire Is…” videos. 

Funding for the program is from a grant from the New Jersey Office of Homeland Security and is sponsored by the New Jersey Firefighters’ Mutual Benevolent Association, a labor union that has represented career firefighters in the state for more than 110 years.

Doctor Frank Field, who has more than 50 years experience as a science editor, meteorologist and reporter for several New York City television networks, conceived the idea for the program in 1987 after he read alarming statistics regarding civilian fire death and injury rates in the United States. 

Viewers can watch the entire series when it repeats back-to-back on Sunday, Oct. 30 at noon. The program will also air over the next few months on WBMA.

WBMA-TV Station Director Bob Duthaler said “we are very excited to work with the Bloomfield Fire Department and NJFiresafety.com to help promote the ‘Fire Is…’ series.”

The series is also being offered for free to schools across New Jersey.

WBMA-TV may be found on Comcast Channel 35 and Verizon FiOS Channel 30.
