Dryer Vent Causes Fire at Laundromat

Small fire causes smoke damage to Dodd Street store

A hot dryer vent is likely the cause of a small fire at a laundromat Saturday afternoon, according to Bloomfield fire officials.

A blaze broke out behind the wall inside Williams Suds-R-Us Laundromat near 55 Dodd St., near Watsessing Avenue station, at approximately 1:30 p.m., according to Bloomfield Fire Inspector Thomas Pelaia. The fire may have gone unnoticed for some time, he said.

"Since it was behind a wall, no one knew about it until it broke through the wall," said Pelaia, who added the blaze was quickly extinguished.

It is unclear if the laundromat was open for service Saturday, but Pelaia said no one was inside when the fire broke out. No injuries have been reported.

East Orange and Nutley Fire Departments were on scene to assist.
