Bloomfield Tax Preparer Pleads Guilty to Filing Fraudulent Returns

The fraudulent tax returns caused nearly $100,000 worth of losses to the government.

A Bloomfield tax preparer admitted Tuesday to causing at least 37 fraudulent tax returns to be filed with the IRS that totaled nearly $100,000 in losses to the government, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.

Daidry Montanez, 41, pleaded guilty to four counts of aiding and assisting in the filing of false federal income returns for the tax years 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012.

Montanez owed and operated, DM Multiservices, a tax preparation business she ran from a Newark storefront.

She prepared false and fraudulent individual income tax returns that contained falsely claimed or fabricated deductions, including fictional business expenses, such as rent or lease of other business property, supplies and travel, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.

The tax returns also purported deductions for home mortgage interest and points, state or local income tax and unreimbursed employee expenses, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.

Montanez used the fraudulent deductions to substantially reduce her clients' taxable income on their individual federal income tax returns, resulting in her clients receiving tax returns that were larger than they were due, the U.S. Attorney's Office.

The losses totaled $99,864 for 37 clients, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.

Each of the four tax counts carries a maximum penalty of up to three years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 6.
