Bloomfield Man Shot Dead in Montclair

Police say 29-year old Ibn Futrell of Bloomfield was pronounced dead at 9:57 p.m. Tuesday.

 

A Bloomfield man was shot to death Tuesday night in Montclair, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s office. No suspects have yet been identified.

Police responded to a report of gunshots fired near 4 Mission Street and Bloomfield Avenue around 9 p.m. Tuesday and discovered a man who was later identified as 29-year-old Ibn Futrell of 17th Street in Bloomfield. Futrell was transported by ambulance to Mountainside Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 9:57 p.m., according to Montclair Police and the prosecutor's office.

Early Wednesday morning, a law enforcement official who asked not to be named said the shooting appeared to be drug- or gang-related.  

According to the Montclair Times, police closed off Mission Street following the incident and were searching for evidence outside the Mission Mini Mart at about 9:10 p.m.

Homicides in Montclair are rare, with only one occurring last year. In that case, a 31-year-old waitress named Shazina Khan was found dead in her apartment near Glenfield Park last July. Her estranged husband, Khalid Khan of Bloomfield, was arrested in the murder.

The investigation in the case of the Futrell shooting is active and ongoing.  No arrests have been made at this time.
