Your Bloomfield Weekend Guide

A Movie Under the Stars, a Gallery Crawl, Live Music and More

Patch has wrangled up so many weekend offerings, it will be a challenge to choose among them. 

Friday alone boasts several big events like the Church Street movie screening of Back to the Future, the Art Loop Gallery Crawl, and Van Vleck’s “Sunset Sense-ations.” 

The rest of the weekend brings a round-up of live music, NJ Jackals games, a community bike ride and more.

-- Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope

Where/When: , 90 Broad St, Bloomfield.  Friday, July 29 at 1:00pm.

Why Go: Cool off and kick back to a screening ofStar Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.

-- Back to the Future Outdoor Screening

Where/When: Church Street & Fullerton Ave., Montclair.  Friday, July 29 at 8:30pm.  (Rain date -- August 5)

Why Go:  Another fabulous outdoor “Montclairismo” movie night courtesy of the  Montclair International Film Festival.  Enjoy the shops and restaurants of lovely Church Street and then settle in your lawn chairs for the 80’s classic family favorite, Back to the Future.

-- Sunset SENSEsations

Where/When: , 21 Van Vleck St, Montclair. Friday July 29, from 6:30pm–8:30pm.

Why Go: Come to Van Vleck for a family-friendly evening of discovery; explore the creatures, sights, and sounds in nature after the sun sets.  The evening includes, crafts, sensory games, a planetarium, and live nocturnal animals.  Rain or shine.  To pre-register, call 973-744-4752.

-- NJ Jackals vs. Pittsfield Colonials at MSU

Where/When: , Normal Ave & Valley Rd, Upper Montclair, NJ (Yogi Berra Stadium) Friday, July 29 at 7:05pm, Saturday, July 30 at 6:35pm and Sunday, July 31 at 2:05 pm.

Why Go:  See the NJ Jackals take on the Pittsfield Colonials. Each game offers a different fun promotion.  On Friday there's special deals for Jackals Facebook Fans and giveaways for the 1st1000 fans. On Saturday enjoy fireworks and on Sunday, it’s Family Fun-Day with $1 hot dogs, post game running the bases, catch on the field and autograph session.

-- Art Loop Gallery Crawl

Where/When: 1 Mitchell Street, between Jefferson and Stockman Street in West Orange.  Friday, July 29 at 5pm.

Why Go: On the last Friday of each month the Art Loop rotates to a different art organization in order to highlight each venue that make up the Valley Arts District.  This month, the Art Loop will focus on the Summer Sculpture Garden. 

Pricing: varies, some suggested donations.

 

--Community Bike Ride 

Where/When: Montclair Public Library, 50 S. Fullerton Ave., Montclair. Friday, July 29 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. 

Why Go: It’s the last Friday of the month and time again for the Bike Walk Montclair Community Ride. There are no leaders or predetermined route; ride starts promptly at 7 p.m. Riders should wear helmets and have well lighted bikes. For more information go here

-- Live Swing Jazz at Palazzo 

Where/When: Palazzo, S. Fullerton Ave, Montclair.  Friday July 29 at 7pm.

Why Go: Dine on Palazzo’s delicious Italian and old world cuisine amidst live jazz courtesy of Joe Licari (clarinet) and Mark Shane (piano.)

-- Live Jazz at Trumpets 

Where/When:  Trumpets, 6 Depot Square, Montclair NJ.  Friday July 29, Saturday July 30 and Sunday July 31.

Why Go:  Trumpets packs the weekend full of Jazz performances. On Friday: Billy Drummond’s Freedom of Ideas, Saturday: Dom Minasi Organ Trio and Sunday: Vocalist Stephen Fuller. Gohere for more information on the performers.

— Shows at Just Jakes

Where/When: Just Jakes, 30 Park Street, Montclair. Friday, July 29 at 10 p.m. and Satuday July 30 at 7pm and 11pm.

Why Go: Just Jake's fills the weekend with several live shows. Friday catch rock/pop/hip hop bandDark City Saints. On Saturday hear classic rock from Smyle at 7pm and at 11pm it's the cover bandAlmost Easy

Pricing: $7 Cover.  Beer specials: Friday $2.50 Coors Light & $3.50 Blue Moon, Saturday $2.50 Bud Light.


-- Live Music at Piano’s Bar and Grill

Where/When: Where/When: , 36 Broad St., Bloomfield.  Friday, July 29 at 10pm and Saturday July 30 at 9pm.

Why Go: Piano's offers up two solid nights of live music. On Friday, check out the Billy Carrion Jazz Band and on Saturday it’s the Straight Nasty Dirty Funk Party Band.

Pricing: no cover, no minimum

 

-- Penny Penniworth 

Where/When: NJ Arts Incubator, Essex Green Shopping Plaza 495 Prospect Ave., West Orange.  Friday July 29 and Saturday July 30 at 8pm.  Sunday, July 31 at 3pm.

Why Go: Four of NJ's best and funniest actors play 14 roles in this satire of all things Dickensian and Masterpiece Theatre-ish. “Anyone ever tortured by a Charles Dickens novel will find lots and lots to laugh at in this parody.” –NY Times.  Check out a Patch review

-- Live Music at Tierney’s 

Where/When: 136-138 Valley Road, Montclair.  Friday, July 29 at 10pm and Saturday, July 30 at 9pm.

Why Go: The weekend rocks at Tierney’s with the Flemtones on Friday night and The Thousand Pities with Speed the Plough and Wild Carnation on Saturday.

Pricing: $5 cover Friday night; cover TBD Saturday night.

 

-- Metallicamp at Just Jake’s

Where/When: , 30 Park St, Montclair.  Saturday, July 30 from 1:00pm–3:00pm.

Why Go:  School of Rock continues its Saturday shows with a heavy metal offering. Students from the Metallicamp will tackle songs from a variety of head banging bands including: Metallica, Megadeath, Quiet Riot and more.

Pricing: Kids 18 and under free, adults $5.

 

-- Butterfly Tent Safari

Where/When: Where: 621 Eagle Rock Ave # B, Roseland, NJ 07068 (Essex County Environmental Center) Saturdays from 12:00pm–3:00pm.

Why Go: Witness live butterflies up close at the Essex County Environmental Center’s Butterfly Tent.  There will also be butterfly themed programs on Saturdays for an additional fee.  Go here for more information, or call 973-228-8776.

—Live Music at Terra

Where/When: Terra at the Isabel Rose located at the Montclair Public Library, 50 S. Fullerton Ave., Montclair. Sunday, July 31 at 2pm. 

Why Go: Snack on delicious fair trade treats and groove to Erik Feder’s ConunDrum, featuring Fred Moises; an afternoon of improvisation with percussion, guitar and lots of jamming promised.

-- Pieces of the Past: Quilt Collection

Where/When: Israel Crane House, 108 Orange Road, Montclair.  Sunday, July 31 from 1pm to 3pm.

Why Go:  The Montclair Historical Society graciously extended the  due to its immense popularity.  Don’t miss this chance to view seldom seen quilts from the 19th and 20th centuries.

Pricing:  $8 adult, $5 children.

 

-- Comedy Sundays at Tierney’s

Where/When: , 136-138 Valley Rd, Montclair, NJ.  Sunday July 10, from 8:00pm–10:00pm.

Why Go: Enjoy some of the area's best rising comedy stars along with special guests from major comedy clubs, casinos, TV and satellite radio.
