Three Area Synagogues Join to Observe Pride Day

The musical and family-friendly service features a choir, reflections and a panel of Gay-Straight Alliance students from Bloomfield and Montclair High Schools

Because June is Pride Month, Congregations Ner Tamid and Shomrei Emunah will join host Bnai Keshet for a musical and family-friendly service for Chag Haga’ava, the Holiday of Pride, on Wednesday, June 22, 7-8 p.m.  The service is open to the community.

Rabbis Elliott Tepperman, Darby Jared Leigh, Steven Kushner and David Greenstein, together with Ner Tamid Cantor Meredith Greenberg, will lead the service. A joint choir from all three synagogues will perform an original composition by Cantor Greenberg, and the siddur (prayerbook) for the service will include reflections by six members of the participating synagogues on what it means to be Jewish and gay in 2011.

The service also features a panel of students in the Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) at Montclair and Bloomfield High Schools, moderated by Cindy Sherman, guidance counselor, Bloomfield High School GSA advisor and anti-bullying speaker. Cantor Greenberg invited the entire community to attend, “support those they love, lend their voices to this movement and have fun.” The evening concludes with refreshments.
