The Weekender: Easter Egg Hunt at Brookdale Park

Plenty of Easter-related activities for you and the family this weekend

This weekend packs a punch in the way of holiday celebrating with Easter festivities and a huge Earth Day event. There’s also straight up revelry with five live music venues and a free movie.

So if you chose (or had) to stick around for Spring Break here’s your guide to finish up the week with a bang.

—Easter Egg Hunt at Brookdale Park

Where/When: Brookdale Park, Bloomfield. Saturday April 23 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Why Go: Kids can tackle a massive egg hunt around the park (bring your own basket) plus meet the Easter Bunny and enjoy games, face painting and more. The event is sponsored by Skyline Community Church.

—Earth Day Celebration at Grand Central Station

Where/When: Vanderbilt Hall in Grand Central Terminal, Vanderbilt Avenue from 42nd and 45th Streets, NYC. Thursday, April 21 at 12 p.m. through Saturday, April 23 at 5 p.m.

Why Go: This is a serious (but fun) Earth Day Celebration that includes films, music, exhibitions, discussion panels, art, food, and loads more.  Earth Day New York is responsible for the mega event and indeed has set the bar high.  Make a point to check out the live bands from the Green Bus Tour http://www.greenbustour.com/index.html For a complete schedule of events and activities go here.

–Kids Workshop: Seed Planting

Where/When: Whole Food, 701 Bloomfield Ave., Montclair. Friday , April 22 from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Why Go: Kids can celebrate Earth Day at Whole Foods with a seed planting workshop–and parents can pick up milk.

Pricing: $10 per child.

–Live Jazz at InsaniTea

Where/When: InsaniTea, 570 Bloomfield Ave., Montclair. Friday, April 22 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Why Go: A mixed roster of fresh young jazz musicans plays live while you drink tea, snack and chill.

Pricing: Free.

—Jews in Sports

Where/When: , 99 S. Fullerton Ave., Montclair. Friday, April 22 from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The Kind Buds live at Tierney’s

Where/When: , 136-138 Valley Rd., Montclair. Friday, April 22 from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Why Go: Before you get too excited, the Kinds Buds refer to musicians “Bud and Budd” but Tierney’s still promises a killer night with this endorsement, “The Kind Buds entertain their audiences with a number of inspiring covers and incendiary originals.”  For a taste of this acoustic duo go here http://www.thekindbuds.com/

The Benjamins live at Just Jakes

Where/When: Just Jakes, 30 Park Street, Montclair. Friday, April 22 at 10 p.m.

Why Go: Admit it, cover bands can be fun and when the show’s local and combined with a few beers it’s a solidly entertaining night. Go here for a preview.

Pricing: $8 cover.

—Souper Saturdays

Where/When: , 24 N Fullerton Ave, Montclair. Saturday, April 23 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Why Go: Members of First United Methodist cook up and serve delicious soup to the community for free! The congregants celebrate “Souper Saturdays” as a way of greeting the Montclair community and exhibiting a little “Love Your Neighbor” sentiment.

Pricing: Free.

—Easter Egg Hunt in Watchung Plaza

Where/When: Watchung Plaza, Montclair. Saturday. April 23 at 11 a.m.

Why Go: It’s your last chance to hunt for free (hopefully treat filled) eggs before the Big Bunny takes over on Easter. Kids ages 6 and under can participate, don’t forget your baskets.

Pricing: Free.

—Roller Skating with the Easter Bunny

Where/When: Branch Brook Park Roller Rink, 7th Ave. and Clifton Ave., Newark. Saturday April 23 from 2 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Why Go: Apparently when he is not hiding eggs or delivering chocolate treats, the Easter Bunny is roller-skating. Join him for a spin and (of course) an egg hunt.

Pricing: $6 per child, $7 per skating adult, $3.50 skate rental.  

—Stars Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace

Where/When: , 90 Broad St., Bloomfield. Saturday April 23 at 1 p.m.

Why Go: Check out a free screening of the first Star Wars prequel, The Phantom Menace. Here’s a brief synopsis, “Two Jedi knights uncover a wider conflict when they are sent as emissaries to the blockaded planet Naboo.” (imdb) Rated PG.

Pricing: Free.

Alligator Live at Tierney’s

Where/When: , 136-138 Valley Rd., Montclair. Saturday April 23 at 10 p.m.

Why Go: If you are in the mood for 60s, 70s, FM rock and cult classics, then don’t miss the band Alligator at Tierney’s.  If you are looking for a preview, check out the band’s website here http://alligatorband.com/

Brian Kirk and the Jirks Live at Just Jakes

Where/When: Just Jakes http://www.justjakes.com/index.html 30 Park Street, Montclair. Saturday April 23 at 10 p.m.

Why Go: This well established cover band can boast impromptu performances with Bruce Springsteen and a roster of other impressive gigs. Listen to their music here.

—NYC Easter Parade and Easter Bonnet Festival

Where/When: Fifth Avenue from 49th to 57th Streets, NYC. Sunday April 24 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Why Go: If you are looking for some kitschy people (and pet) watching fun, then the Easter Parade and Bonnet Festival is for you. 

Pricing: Free.

—Easter Brunch at Palazzo

Where/When: Palazzo 11 S. Fullerton Ave., Montclair. Sunday, April 24 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Why Go: While there are many great dining spots in Montclair and Bloomfield, kids under 8 eat free for Easter Brunch at this well-established favorite.  To view the brunch menu go here.
