Supt. Bing Faces Parents Over Teacher Cuts

In a Power Point presentation that relied extensively on comments from Bloomfield Patch, Bloomfield Schools Superintendent Jason Bing explained the current school budget crunch in front of an auditorium packed with teachers and parents on Tuesday night. Bing, on his second budgeting cycle as Superintendent, said Bloomfield schools have been historically underfunded, with the district relying on federal and state money for basic expenditures.

Police say that a Newark man reached for a baseball bat after being pulled over for violating motor vehicle laws while driving drunk with his young daughter in his car. According to a police report, Raul Campoverde, 25, sped past a Bloomfield police cruiser waiting at a red light.

In a letter on the budget released on Monday, Bloomfield Schools Superintendent Jason Bing lays out how past fiscal decisions laid the groundwork for the current budget crunch. Bing said that in the past, the district has operated on a bare bones budget, saying that past school budgets have reduced or eliminated textbooks, facility projects and jobs. After those reductions, Bing said, school operations have overly relied on state and federal aid for basic necessities like books and technology.  

Police: Four Men Attack and Rob Bloomfield Resident

A 44-year-old Bloomfield man was reportedly jumped and robbed by four men at approximately 9:35 p.m. Friday near the apartment complex at 249 Belleville Ave. 

BEA Pres. Rallies Support for Bloomfield Teachers

In a letter to parents, the head of Bloomfield's teachers Union urged parents to come out for the next BOE meeting. The meeting, held at the high school auditorium on Tuesday night, follows last week's special meeting where the board passed a tentative budget that cut 86 teacher jobs as well as secretarial and administrative positions.
